Personal history
Sabin was born and grew up in Filishar. Though a pickpocket and thief in his younger days he turned his life around and became a reasonably successful shopkeeper near the docks of his hometown. While mostly dealing in common goods, he would occassionally buy and sell paintings, statues, and other pieces of art.
At least that was the public version of his story. As a pickpocket he was hired several times to acquire messages and small items from those passing through Filishar. Those that hired him were impressed by his discretion in not inquiring why he was hired or the contents of messages, and they set him several tests to see where his loyalties (if any) lay. Finding that Sabin had no love for the elves, and a distain for those from other lands they decided to recruit him into the Ministary for Foregin Affairs. His former criminal contacts were led to believe that he had obtained a big score and taken the opportunity to get out while the going was good.
Sabin spent years gathering information and stealing key items from foreigners in Filishar. He was responsible for foiling several elven plots including an assassination attempt against the king. In later years Sabin was given responsibility for managing other information gatherers rather doing all the work himself. His network covered both Filishar and island of Laiqua, which led to a deal constant duel of wits against his counterparts in the Dintirn.
The artwork that Sabin traded was actually messages from agents like Roke, who used the placement of objects in a picture, the angle of an arm and the like to convey information. Once the information had been noted down Sabin would sell on these works of art, helping to bolster the cover and providing some funding for the operation.
