Barlgura (Bar-Lu-Gor-A)

Barlguras also known as Leaping Demons, are bestial Tanar'ri Demons that resemble Rrangutans. Their ape-like qualities reflected their savage nature, fearsome power, and tribal mentality.

Appearance

Barlguars normally stand around 5-6 ft tall, although some are known to reach just under 8 ft and weighed around 650 Ib. They are visually like Orangutans, possessing broad shoulders, long forelimbs, and short legs. While capable to standing upright they normally shamble across the ground all fours like apes. Where their skin is exposed, it is a bluish-grey, and most of their bodies are covered in matted reddish-brown fur, but they are capable of changing its colour reflexively. A pair of tusks jut out from their jaws, and they leer at their enemies with rheumy, red eyes furthering their terrifying and grooming visage. The key feature that distinguished them from Orangutans are that their hands and feet each had six digits with noticeable length claws. Despite being capable of fighting without them, some wield weaponry and wore clothing or armor.

Combat

Ambush predators at heart, Barlguars prefer to jump their enemies while they have the element of surprise, using guerilla tactics to win. They use their camouflage or invisibility powers to hide from prey before jumping out at them. Despite their seemingly clumsy legs, Barlguars are excellent pounces, making massive running leaps. They can rip their prey apart with tooth and claw or pummel them into a bloody pulp with their bare fists, although some used weapons and armor. Barlguars prefer to travel through the tops of trees where they have more mobility, and their camouflage is more easily usable. Hunting in small packs is their favoured method and, when outnumbering a foe, some will hold the target down while the others viciously savage them.

Behaviour

Barlguars are the most animalistic of the Tanar’ri but are neither true beast nor very intelligent. While still evil, they are somewhat indifferent to the general dealing the wars of Demons and would rather be left alone by those not of their kind. Whereas most Demons despise each other and Devils, Barlguars are not as hateful, lacking the same fiery animosity. They do not take much pleasure in bullying weaker Demons like Drethces and Manes but viewed them as obstacles and annoyances. They only begrudgingly dealt with Demons of a higher status than their own, and only when they are clearly more powerful. Their territories are decorated with grisly trophies taken from their prey as well as with totems and fetishes. Although hey are telepaths, they also expressed themselves vocally and using body language by changing their fur colour, such as brilliant orange when enraged and a dull grey when calm.

Society

Barlguars normally form packs led by dominant males within the ancient forests and cliff-ridden mountains of the Plane of Demons, far from any other demonic forces. In some parts of the Plane of Demons, Barlguars form tribes of 300 or more of their kin and separated themselves from the normal politics of the plane. They form crude governments, some of the few that exist among Demonkin, and do not serve other Tanar'ri, allowing them to operate by themselves and enjoy their lifestyle. Although their numbers protect them from being attacked by other Demons, there are tales of Balors that laid waste to such rebel factions. When two tribes met, it always results in a bloodbath with only one tribe surviving. When force to fight on behalf of more powerful Demons, Barlguars serve as scouts. Barulguras prefer to hunt alongside their own kind in packs when they can, but if forced will work with other Demons, they try to dominate and manipulate less-intelligent types and contradict the desires of their superiors whenever they can. Greater Tanar'ri treat them with shocking cruelty when they misbehave. Many Demon Lords favoured them for their brutal ferocity and appreciated their savagery, Demon Lords like Yeenoghu and Baphomet.
