Sheriffs
Most of the Continent is under feudalism which means that most villages lack a serious defensive force. When a particular village faces hardships, such as a band of thieves or bandits, they can petition their lord for aid against these ruffians. If their plea is answered, a Sheriff is sent to provide help with the problem at hand. A sheriff is most often a squire whose knight serves the local lord. Until the problem is solved, the sheriff is obligated to aid the village and serve as the right hand of the lord, making decisions in their stead.
Men-at-Arms
Most sheriffs can and do ride their own horse, which allows them to move quickly between settlements. As riding horses are quite expensive, people often assume that sheriffs are actually knights coming to save them from their woes. Despite this belief, a sheriff is usually not as well equipped as a knight, wearing only chainmail and a helmet. Their weaponry is often on par with knights however, carrying lances, swords and maces with them as well as crossbows to allow them to face any number of different problems.Representatives
A sheriff wields the authority of their lord and must do everything in their power to solve a given situation to the best of their abilites. This often includes dealing with bandits or thieves, but not always. Sheriffs can be sent out to pass judgement in complicated debates or to investigate a mystery. During their visit, a sheriff receives a welcome and hospitality that befits their lord. Failing to do so may draw the ire of the lord.
