Master of the First Wing Sakai Tadatsugu (a.k.a. 酒井 忠次)

Summary:

A former general of the Tokugawa Clan who held the distinction of being one of the family's Four Heavenly Kings, as well as Master of the First Wing of the Palace of the Firebird. Sakai Tadatsugu was, unlike the other Heavenly Kings, entirely Human. He joined the Tokugawa willingly, knowing their demonic nature, and rose to a high position, though his soul was inevitably tainted by working so closely with such creatures. His goal was always to mitigate the amount of damage that would be visited onto his hometown of Mikawa under demonic rule. To this end, he drafted and enforced many harsh edicts, placing the city under martial law and enforcing a strict curfew to keep the humans well in check. Though his plan was to avoid any demonic retribution that might fall upon them were they to riot, his own actions caused a great deal of suffering in their own way. Only with the arrival of Solomon were these edicts rescinded.
Tadatsugu is an honorable man, but also a cruel one. He holds many lofty ideals, but lacks the compassion to truly make him a hero in the eyes of others. Instead, he is willing to take almost any action to ensure the protection of his people, even if it puts some of them in danger for the benefit of the many. Though he is not totally free of regret, Tadatsugu still believes that he made the right choices in his past, based on what information he had on the situation at the time.
He has since been separated from his soul and transformed into an undead Kyonshi at the hands of Hashinara Yoshitakatomo. Tadatsugu served his new master with taciturn efficiency, having no choice but to obey. Perhaps mercifully, his unholy servitude was cut short when he was slain by Kashirin at the Palace of the Firebird. Yoshitakatomo still holds his soul in her* grasp, however.

History

Sakai Tadatsugu was slain by Kashirin in The Palace of the Firebird.  Given the opportunity and knowledge of Kashirin's nature, he will no doubt seek revenge against her.
