The Reborn White Fox
Akechi Mitsuhide died. More specifically, he was killed and his soul eaten by a demon during the Mōri Tournament. Uncontent to allow an old foe to perish such, Hashinara Yoshitakatomo pulled the cad's damaged soul from the devil's belly and stored it in her mask. There he slept for some time.
Later, during a kerfuffle in the depths of Yomi involving Kashin Koji and an Ancient Gashadokuro, Mitsuhide's soul was released. It slipped into the Yellow Springs, no doubt subject to Izanami-no-Mikoto's fell influence, and his fate became unknown.
...Until now.
Having "slipped away" from Izanami and out of Yomi, Akechi Mitsuhide reappeared in the depths of Wakigami Castle as a coherent soul. He needed a new body. Fortunately, there was a crypt just nearby with a variety of fine options to choose from... Perhaps surprisingly, Mitsuhide doesn't appear to be interested in revenge. He voiced his desire to reuinte with Oda Nobunaga; failing that, he's apparently willing to work for the Hashinara Clan for a while until he can make it happen.
