Rune Carving
One of the most common rituals in some cultures is the carving of runes to achieve a specific magical result.
Runes are not an alphabet but are symbols of various meanings such as Japanese Kanji. Whenever a certain symbol is used in a magical context is magically active it is called a rune.
A related technique is that of using Magic Characters and Symbols in writing and drawing. The main point of difference is that runes must always be "carved" by hand and are thus often much more likely to last a long time and that the symbols are not the same. A rune is a rune that always has a variety of meanings and a magical sign or letter is just that a specific character or icon to represent a very specific thing.

History
Various runic "languages" symbols and systems are in use throughout Turian and have been since the dawn of the world. This leads to the assumption that rune carving was imported, brought along by different people from their origins.
There are however facts that indicate the evolution of those imported systems and even the invention of new runic systems in Turian as well.

Components and tools
The most common tools is the Runcarving Knife but other tools like chisels etc. are also found.
For rune magic to work properly it is of importance that the runes are embedded with the magic users magic not only during the activation but during the carving as well. This means that each rune needs to be carved by the same person or persons who will later empower the rune array.
