3 years later, Retter goes to his usual spot at moonlit lake and finds a girl with tangled chestnut hair crying. Retter gives her an apple and they become friends.

Frieda is 3 years old and has to fight her cousin in a fencing match for the title of the heiress. Mia wins easily, Frieda's uncle, Edmund, announces Mia as the New heiress and tells Frieda to get out of his sight. Upset, Frieda runs off somewhere, crying, but gets stuck in some trees, bushes, tearing her clothes and tangling her hair, and she's covered in dirt. Frieda finds a lake and sits on the ground to continue crying. Retter, who had harvested his first apples, decides to go to his favorite spot to celebrate but finds Frieda. When Frieda sees Retter she apologizes for taking his spot, but Retter says it's fine and offers her an apple. They become friends, Retter takes Frieda to Elise's place where she gets a bath and a new white dress.
