Gillsburg Republic
Culture
Gillsburg's culture mainly revolves around being relatively easy-going. A good chunk of the Gillsburg population is consisted of halflings and gnomes, hence why the easy-going mindset is so frequently adopted. Hard work is also a well-appreciated trait, as working hard will allow a country to prosper.
On the other hand, the citizens of Gillsburg generally don't like to be societal standouts. People who try to gain a huge amount of fame and recognition are seen as brash and even corruptible. Humility is a trait that everyone should have, and arrogance is a trait to avoid.
History
The Gillsburg Republic was founded by a large population of emigrants from different countries. The emigrants all wanted to start a new society that was more laidback, relaxed, and not as pressuring as the countries that they left. In the year of 87, the country was fully established, and the capital city of Rockville was built to completion.
The Gillsburg Republic's general peace was suddenly and violently disturbed when the country was inducted into the first Holy Grail War that was caused by a coalition of Seredenan mages. Having a weak military, the country was doomed to failure. And so, in the span of just 28 days, all of the 250 participants were defeated one way or another. Norvania placed a strong trade deal with Gillsburg, hoping to acquire more of the country's tin deposits.
The embarrassing failure of the Gillsburg Republic during the first Holy Grail War has caused certain groups to form. One of which was an infamous militia/mercenary guild. Militias were heavily looked down upon in the country, as they represented "old world militarism." However, this militia group would soon indirectly save the country in the third Holy Grail war, as the guild became large enough that it was recognized as a worthy faction to join the Holy Grail War. Unfortunately, the mercenaries were defeated by Haroshika due to the former's more rudimentary forms of combat training. Despite this defeat, the country itself was mostly left alone both during and after the war.
Demography and Population
The Gillsburg Republic's population is relatively low, barely reaching 800,000 people. A majority of the population lives in Rockville. Humans make up around a 40% of the population. Halflings and gnomes make up 30% and 20% of the population, and the other 10% is made up of other races. The surprisingly high population of halflings is one of the reasons as to why the culture of Gillsburg is surprisingly more laidback.
Military
The Gillsburg Republic has arguably one of the weakest militaries on Darnolia and probably around the rest of Tynaria Alt. The country only has a defense force that has less than 10,000 members. The reason why the country has such an underdeveloped military is due to the people's ideas that a super powerful military can lead to corruption and power struggles within. A large military reminds them of the very reason as to why their ancestors even formed the country to begin with. Certain mercenary and militia groups are better at being militaries than the official Gillsburg Republic Defense Force. This lack of military power is also the reason why the country tries to maintain the best foreign relations as possible, as the country would surely be destroyed if a full-on invasion were to occur.
Foreign Relations
The country tries to maintain decent foreign relations with other countries. Even Norvania, the country that forced Gillsburg to pay a heavy tribute as well as a heavy trade deal, isn't as hated by the country as some may think. The people and the government have a general agreement that it's best to not aggravate any foreign power, as the country really is not all that well prepared.
Agriculture & Industry
Agriculture is a major part of the Gillian economy, with over a half of the population performing some type of agrarian work. Because of the extensive amount of agriculture in the country, food shortages are generally not a concern.
Industry is a bit more complicated. The relatively significant gnome population does give the country a slight boost in innovation. Many of the more mechanical forms of technology crafted by gnomes have been more towards quality-of-life rather than for creating a revolution in production. Mechanical tractors are an example of Gillian gnome engineering.
