Light of Akoom

The Light of Akoom is the prophet's cleric, advisor, and normally, friend. The Light is the highest authority under the Prophet, tasked with dealing with the day-to-day duties of running the city. The title is well respected throughout the world, and on several occasions swayed the course of history.

History of Duties

The title of Light of Akoom has had a complex history, ranging from being the true power of the faith of Akoom to being an unofficial title. Though this history will cover the title itself and not what its holders do. With times that the light isn't even a cleric of Akoom.

Faithless Origin 50 to 69AP

By 50 Rebel both the clerical and military sides of the Akoom faith had sprung up, Akoomtet was an up-and-coming city, and the second Prophet, Her Grace Dura I had been coronated. The issue was She was a warrior first, like her predecessor and clerics kept chasing after her for civic duties. When Dura raged that she had hired the council to perform these tasks her Steward, an Elf by the name of Elandar, informed her that though this was true, she still needed to sign off on it. In response she gave him full domestic authority in her name, saying it must be Akoom's will to give him the nerve to speak to her in such a blunt manner.   Due to, much to the faithful's annoyance, not a follower of Akoom, Elandar took the title of Lord protector. Holding the position for eight years before stepping down. Over the years more educated men took the position, though never lasted long due to Dura's temper.   During this time the duties of the Lord protector were the day-to-day running of Akoomtet and surrounding countryside. This included running council meetings, making sure there was enough food, and public works among other such duties. They were also referred to as my Lord

The Light 69 to 996AP

In 70 Rebel, the last Lord protector, a cleric to Akoom, was banished by Dura for suggesting a sue for peace with the broken Phervian. Dura demanded her friend took the position back reinstating Elandar. Four years later, Elandar proposed conquest of the surrounding area, mainly to get a bored Dura out of his hair while he ran the area. This led to the title change to The Light of Akoom, though at this time the title remained secular. Elandar would hold the position several times in this period, though never more than ten years at a time.   During this time the duties mostly stayed the same, with an increased advisory role, it should be stressed the importance of being the prophet's friend during this period due to the ease of dismissing the light.

Religous position 996 to 2125AP

Murzush II would bring an end to the secular nature of the position when he ascended to the Prophet of Akoom, Relieving an old Elandar for the last time. Murzush choose his personal cleric of Akoom to fill the new holy position, with rules that only senior clerics could hold the title. The change also came with a new form of address, Your Holiness.   This led to the position being as reliant on the clergy as the prophet, as the clerics were the only ones allowed to elevate members to senior status, though the prophet could still dismiss the light, the clergy often got involved making a situation where the light no longer needed to be friends with the prophet.   On top of their already existing duties, Murzush increased the advisory role, having the Light lead the prophet's council in matters of empire, not just the Akoomtet area. He also had full jurisdiction over the Akoomtet area and would see to the Prophet's religious needs, when needed.

Anti-Prophet 1486 to 1490AP

While this was within the Religious period, it is often classified as its own. This period is the conflict between his Holiness, Light Grom, and His Grace, Prophet Yulgrick Rubyborn. During this time Grom tried to declare himself as the Prophet, stating only an Orc of Akoom could be. This led to contradictory policies, full-on fights in council meetings, and almost a sundering of the Empire. The situation was resolved when Yulgrick stormed out of a council meeting to the training grounds, picked up two sets of crusader plates and greatswords, and threw one at the following Grom. Yulgrick won, resulting in, technically, the only time a Light has died in office.

Lightless 2125 to 4100AP

In 126 Blood, the Demon Prophet accused the Light of Akoom of being a Heretic as the Light spoke out against his continual brutal measures. He stripped the Light of all titles, lands, and responsibilities before executing the Orc. The position would remain empty until 133 Blood when the Imp died. The new Lord of Akoomtet was elected by the clergy and decided to take the old title of Lord Protector. Everyone else, however, including Prophet Quortz called him the Light of Akoom, though the title wasn't official. This would remain even after the prophets returned to Akoomtet. The title of Light was used by everyone and called the current as His Holiness, the title was never used in the official documentation or recognized by the Light themselves.   The responsibilities returned to that of ruling the city in the Prophet's name, with duties similar to the Light era.

Reinstatment 4100AP

In 101 Fey, during Vauvoi Strongvigor's first official address as Prophet, he called the current Lord protector as the Light of Akoom, lighting the way home. This declaration was enough for every Akoom state, with the authority of the Light instantly being recognized as if the title was never removed. The position was the same in 122 Fey as it was in 130 Divine.
