Great Library
Psykhês iatreîon: Hospital of the Soul
The Great Library is the largest library in United Britannia and Hibernia. With thirteen floors, the Great Library contains volumes on almost all manners of subjects. All witches are allowed access to the Great Library and can borrow certain books. Certain areas of the Library are restricted and require Council approval to access. Most of these areas contain information on dangerous magic or classified government materials.
Librarians
A Librarian is an extremely distinguished career and there are usually about twenty to thirty working Librarians at any time. Librarians assist witches in their research as well as procure new materials for the Library. Many also conduct their own research and publish on it.
Purpose / Function
The Great Library serves many purposes. Besides providing books for research and pleasure, it also provides study spaces, social spaces, and other community spaces. The Great Library is used regularly by the majority of the population.
Alterations
The Great Library has added eleven floors since its founding. In order to preserve its historical nature, no alterations are typically made to the Great Library except for additions.
Architecture
The Great Library's exterior is in the Greek architecture style, adorned with columns and mythological statues. The interior is an amalgamation of styles, typically based on the time in which the interior was built. Many valuable objects and furniture fill the Great Library, and at times, people will simply tour the building to look at the historical items.
History
The Great Library was built in 156 CE. Because witches value education so highly, it is one of the most popular and well-known buildings in Ilyrium and in United Britannia and Hibernia as a whole. Over the next two thousand years, a floor or two was typically added at a time. The latest addition (the twelfth floor) was added in 1903.
