Lupinalia Massacre
The Lupinalia Massacre occurred on October 16, 73 CE. It resulted in the deaths of about 8000 witches. The situation boiled over after a year of conflict between those who supported Dark Magic being outlawed and those that either practiced (or were born with) Dark Magic. Not a traditional battle, the Council monitored those suspected of Dark Magic and on October 16, they captured over a 100 witches suspected of Dark Magic. Incensed at their immediate execution, those who practiced Dark Magic attacked those that did not, resulting in over 7000 deaths. After, the Dark Magic witches fled Ilyrium and settled in the Crypta Labyrinthus as Mala.
The Conflict
Battlefield
The massacre took place in a field that is now situated outside of Ilyrium. No one builds there, and there is no marker, but everyone calls it Massacre Fields.
Historical Significance
The Massacre was simply the final chapter in a battle that began boiling in 72 CE when the Council outlawed Dark Magic completely. Many at the time practiced Dark Magic ethically (or were born with it) and were incensed by the outlaw. Witches with Dark Magic attempted to hide for about a year, but on October 16, 73 CE many were captured and killed to make an example, and those that were not captured came to their brethren's aid, where they massacred those that supported the illegality of Dark Magic.
Legacy
For the Council and Magisterium, the Lupinalia Massacre is a reminder for witches why Dark Magic is absolutely outlawed, no exceptions.
