Winston

Beloved leader who made a grave mistake that he paid dearly for, for the rest of his life.

Early Life

Winston is said to have grown up around mercenaries, and eventually had joined an averagely influential clan where he helped with their raids as a foot soldier and, occasionally, tank commander. He had good successes on the battlefield and was pretty popular with his superiors. They didn't promote him to any higher rank, however, despite his repeated requests.

Founding the Scavengers

Having slightly more ambition than that, Winston eventually decided to quit his clan and try to found his own. This didn't go as well as he imagined; he could only recruit a ragtag group of three mercenaries from a handful of different towns. His clan of four, later five, people didn't really grow despite his best efforts and their raids ended up being looting runs more than anything else. They didn't manage to hold a base, and eventually made their home in a bunker near the town Ruindom. When this town started getting raided by the Legion, the Scavengers tried to defend it to the best of their ability whenever units got sent to attack - or at least salvage whatever was left intact afterwards.

The Incident

During one of the attacks of the Legion, their teammate Claudia got locked out of the bunker. Despite everyone else asking to open the bunker gates to let her back in, Winston forbade it and kept her locked out, which led to her getting kidnapped. Angler in particular didn't cope with the situation well and snapped. He cornered Winston the following night and started an argument, which escalated into a fight where he attacked his leader with a hunting knife through the eye.   Thinking that he had killed Winston, Angler declared himself the new leader of the Scavengers... but the poor previous leader was still alive, if barely.

Existence After

The other Scavengers were horrified to learn what had happened. They had sort of expected Angler to try murdering Winston, but not that he'd fail in the terrible way he did. Now, no one had the heart to finish him off - they'd have felt even worse knowing that they'd have killed a completely defenseless person.
"Winston is a handsome, quiet fellow with the personality of a square foot of moss."
— a visitor's opinion
Winston can't do anything on his own anymore - he can sit up straight or stand still in a spot, or even chew food, or walk if he is being led by the hand; but his stare is completely vacant and he doesn't seem to react to any words spoken to him, or anything happening around him. He doesn't respond to questions. Sometimes, a faint smile appears on his features for a while, but most of the time, he wears a slight frown.   Even though two years have passed since the incident, the Scavengers keep Winston around. He accompanies them during their meals, downtime, and waits for them inside the bunker when they return from a raid. Angler is mostly his caretaker, or anyone else who is available if he can't do it. They tell themselves that he'll eventually recover and be back to his old self, but deep down realize that this is probably not going to actually happen.
