Akusa
Goddess of Madness and Nightmares
Akusa is the direct result of Cthulhu's corruptive influence upon the world of Urlyra. She came into being when Omorusa, the previous goddess of dreams and divination, started her decent into madness at the coming of the Dreamer in the Deep. The Elder God's whispers permeated Omorusa's mind and began to corrupt her realm, the Dreamlands. In an attempt to save her mind she fell into a deep slumber and attempted to rend the corrupted parts of the Dreamlands away from what was left of her realm. However, in attempting to do so she tore her own mind asunder and created two new deities. Akusa was created from the parts of Omorusa's mind that had already been driven mad by Cthulhu's influence, splitting off and claiming the corrupted part of the Dreamlands as her domain. She has dubbed her domain the Nightmare Realm. Her "sister", Yusoka, was created from the parts of Omorusa's mind that had not yet been driven to madness.
Yusoka and her sister Akusa both still mentally inhabit the physical body of Omorusa. Fortunately, Omorusa's body has not awakened from the slumber she initially went into to try and separate the corrupted parts of her mind. This means that Yusoka and Akusa both operate purely from their respective domains in the Dreamlands and Nightmare Realm. No one has attempted to wake Omorusa's body and no one is entirely sure what would happen should her body awaken.
Akusa is a being of madness and chaos who revels in spreading terror and insanity. She delights in corrupting the minds of mortals and driving them to perform depraved acts. Akusa delights in offering knowledge or power at the expense of sanity. She actively works against her sister, Yusoka. Akusa constantly attempts to expand her Nightmare Realm into the Dreamlands, corrupt dreams and visions, and convert Yusoka's worshippers. It is Akusa's belief that should she exterminate Yusoka and fully claim the Dreamlands, that Omorusa's body will awaken and Akusa can claim full control over it.
Worshippers of Akusa are often madmen and doomsayers. Most of them spend their time attempting to spread rumors of catastrophe and portents of doom to cause paranoia and terror or drive others to madness. Like their goddess, they enjoy tempting people with knowledge and power at the expense of their sanity. They are avid drug abusers and enjoy crafting and dispensing various mind-altering substances to the populace. Mad alchemists are popular followers of Akusa. Many of her worshippers even specialize in weaponizing drugs and poisons. This works hand-in-hand with their preferred method of deliver in combat, the blowgun. Akusa's followers actively target worshippers of Yusoka and attempt to torment and convert them at every given opportunity.
Akusa's churches are not openly accepted in most communities. Most are secret gathering places or hidden behind façade of a business or other place of worship. Her churches often contain drug dens, profane ritual chambers, and torture rooms. From these places, Akusa's worshippers attempt to sow fear and madness. It is not unusual for shrines dedicated to Akusa to move frequently to avoid discovery from those who would try to root them out.
