Carcharos

God of the Seas and Sea Monsters

The great sea monster known as Carcharos was not always a god of such power. In the time before the leylines and before magic suffused the world of Urlyra, Carcharos swam the oceans as a kaiju. A massive hybridization of a shark and a mosasaur, Carcharos prowled the world's oceans and terrorized its coasts. In its time as a kaiju, Carcharos both birthed and sired many other sea monsters and hunted whatever and where ever it wanted. So great was its reputation that the old god of the sea, Mardanros, resolved himself to hunt and slay Carcharos.   Mardanros did not seek to do so out of any just cause or to protect his domain of the seas but rather for the glory and honor of slaying such a great monster. However because the leylines and magic did not yet exist in the world, Mardanros lost much of his deific power upon manifesting on Urlyra. Mardanros was not deterred by this challenge, seeing this as way to increase his bragging rights upon his victorious hunt of the sea monster. But Carcharos was no mindless monster and was far more clever a predator than it was given credit for. The hunt lasted for twenty-seven days, during which time Mardanros and Carcharos met three times and each time Carcharos managed to escape the god of the sea. Mardanros grew increasingly more frustrated by this. Their fourth and final confrontation lasted for four days with an unforeseen conclusion. Somehow Carcharos killed and devoured the god of the seas, Mardanros, and in doing so ascended to godhood itself.   Upon its ascension, Carcharos gained a new level of intelligence, awareness, and power. Carcharos has long since left the Material Plane to hunt the cosmos and flex its divinity. As a god, Carcharos is fickle and destructive. It believes in the survival of the fittest, whether that be through strength or cleverness. Carcharos doesn't seem to have any deeper motivations than to hunt and devour what it can. Most of the other gods tend to avoid dealings with Carcharos and it seems to do the same.   Most of Carcharos' followers are pirates, raiders, and cultists of sharks or other sea predators. Its followers share Carcharos' philosophy of survival of the fittest and taking whatever you have the strength to take. Many of its worshippers will make offerings for safe passage through waters where great sea creatures or monsters are known to dwell, often times these offerings are humanoid sacrifices. Probably the most infamous worshippers of Carcharos are the Motoa who inhabit the Kanoloa Archipelago. Many of the Motoa are weresharks or descendants of weresharks and these individuals are often seen as blessed or gifted by Carcharos itself.   Places of worship dedicated to Carcharos are usually located along coastlines or other large bodies of water. They are usually simple structures that are most meant as a place to perform sacrifices and other rites to appease Carcharos. Most of these structures that are built to be larger or more elaborate were built to double as a lair for creatures of the sea or to lure such creatures there during sacrificial rites.
