Nobudaira

God of Family and Tradition

Similar to Dazra, Nobudaira is a deity with a strong sense of honor. However, he has a particular focus on family and tradition. Nobudaira believes that duty to one's family comes before all other things, followed by duty to one's liege or community. The traditions of family and community are sacred to Nobudaira. Deities like Dazra and Thozan respect Nobudaira for his sense of honor and adherence to a personal code while deities like Azaelenn or Kahi find him to be too strict. Nobudaira is often depicted as a warrior wearing traditional samurai o-yoroi armor. When not depicted in armor, Nobudarai is usually portrayed as having long black hair worn in the Okunese top knot style. It is believed that Nobudaira's eyes are a deep, crystalline red color and thus statues and other works of art that represent him will often have red garnets set in his eyes.   Nobudaira is particularly opposed to Akusa, Atu, Gorlithe, and Tecahteotl. Omorusa was a close friend and confidant to Nobudaira and when Akusa was created from the corrupted portion of Omorusa's conscience, Nobudaira vowed to find a way to restore his friend and aid Yusoka. Nobudaira believes Atu to be a treacherous coward for attempting to murder Benatur. Of all the deities, Nobudaira despises Gorlithe and Tecahteotl the most. Gorlithe succeeded in murdering her mother while Tecahteotl attempted to betray and murder his brother, Ollitor. Nobudaira believes these heinous acts against their families to be unforgiveable and punishable by death. Nobudaira respects Dazra, Thozan, Teyocah, and Xalla for their familial values and their honorable dispositions.    Nobudaira's worshippers consist mostly of samurai, traditionalist families, and community leaders. It is common for entire families to worship Nobudaira throughout several generations. Many samurai and other warriors who pledge fealty to lords, families, or communities pay homage to Nobudaira in some form or another. Many assume that Nobudaira's followers adhere to strict and overbearing traditions or codes, but this is not always the case. It varies greatly on the individual family's beliefs. One family might have extremely restrictive traditions while another could be quite lax and have only a handful of values they wish for its members to uphold. Likewise, punishment for transgressions against oaths of fealty or traditions vary. Ostracizing or banishment are common punishments, often with ways for the transgressor to atone. Permanent banishment, duels to the death, or even ritual suicide (seppuku) are more extreme punishments but are not unheard of.   Churches dedicated to the worship of Nobudaira tend to simple and welcoming in design. While public churches are common enough, the majority of Nobudaira's shrines are personalized and semi-private structures belonging to families or communities. These private shrines usually have places to pay respects to the ancestors of the family or community or hold various artifacts or relics of importance to them. Worshippers are encouraged to keep family trees and a doctrine or code of traditions and rules within these shrines. In the more communal churches, there are archives kept that contain the family trees and familial doctrines of their worshippers. Dojos and other training facilities are a common addition to Nobudaira's church where the clergy and members can meditate and train.
