Metred Plains

The Metred Plains are are a large expanse of grassland, centered on watershed of The Great Mother. It is mostly inhabited by pastoral nomads, along with a series of agrarian settlements along the river. The plains are incorporated into the Kanflu Empire as the province of Metred.

Geography

The area consists of a large grassy plain. The The Great Mother bisects the region. It is a very slow-moving river due to the very flat nature of the area. In the south-west, the region is bounded by the Kanflu highlands which are the dividing line between the watersheds of the Great Mother and Great Father. The nearly impassable Ba'ed mountain range forms a hard border to the east.

Natural Resources

The villages and towns along the river cultivate a variety of grains. The majority of these are exported down river to the hungry markets in Kanflu. In the plains beyond, pastoral nomads raise sheep and horses. Their sheep are renowned for their long and soft wool. The nomads trade wool with the river villages for necessities they can't produce as well as luxury goods.

History

The plains were initially inhabited by pastoral nomads. These were eventually displaced along the river by colonists from Kanflu Empire who established settlements and practiced agriculture. Away from the river, the plains are sparesly inhabited and dominated by the nomads.   Over time, the whole region was subjugated and incorporated into the empire as the province of Metred. While the nomadic inhabitants of the plain acknowledge the authority of Kanflu, they have much independence to rule themselves as long as they pay a yearly tribute and contribute troops to the army. They are renowned for some of the best light cavalry.
