Klaus Mitter was born on Earth to a family of rural farmers. Officially the collective wanted to return to humanity's roots and grow organic food like their ancestors did but in 2368 Federation inspectors discovered the commune was a front for illicit narcotic manufacturing and his parents and other adults in the compound had links to Orion Syndicates. Mitter was put into foster care and was relocated to New York City. While in primary education, Mitter was involved in several security incidents and was eventually remanded to a juvenile detention facility until he completed his education in 2378. Weeks after graduating, Mitter enlisted in Starfleet, passing his certifications to become a lab assistant and in 2379 was assigned to the USS Orpheus.
