Ejia Vauias (Eh-jee-ah Vow-eye)
Ejia Vauias was a Starfleet officer who was caught operating a black market smuggling operation. He was caught after trying to kill his partner, Lt. Cmdr. Escribano. Ejia is joined to the Vauias host.
Prior to 2377, Vauias was a senior member of Starfleet's Special Operation Division assigned to tracking down and recovering stolen and lost artifacts. His career was long and successful with hundreds of successful recoveries including dozens of truly priceless relics. Unfortunately it turned out that this entire career was an elaborate ruse. In 2376, his partner, Escribano, discovered that he was secretly the leader of the Azure Bondsmen, a group of elite artifact smuggler and counterfeiters with loose ties to the Orion Syndicates. Escribano discovered that after stealing an artifact, the Azure Bondsmen would make a counterfeit version and set up a scapegoat to get "caught" smuggling the "artifact". Vauias, as a senior recovery specialist, would then verify the fake was authentic and the case would be closed allowing the rest of the Azure Bondsmen to move the stolen goods without worrying about attracting Starfleet attention.
This operation had been going on for decades until Escribano independently authenticated a piece Vauias had declared genuine and found telltale markings of fraud that an experienced artifact expert would never miss. She then went back and re-verified dozens of pieces Vauias had recovered and discovered they were all counterfeits as well. Before she could confront him or turn over her evidence, he ambushed her with hired mercenaries nearly killing her. Escribano pursued her ex-partner and tracked him down across half a dozen planets to finally corner and arrest him. Unfortunately the rest of the Azure Bondsmen caught wind of the pursuit and have since scattered and disappeared. Vauias was uncooperative and was sentenced ot serve at a penal colony for decades for his crimes. Before he could serve a single day, a group of mercenaries attacked the prisoner transport and Vauias was freed.
Starfleet Intelligence considers tracking down Vauias a high priority and there is significant pressure from the Trill to recover the Vauias symbiont but so far all the trails related to Vauias and the Azure Bondsmen have gone cold.
