Dragonborn are a proud, family-oriented, and well-cultured species. They believe they have been around longer than any others, coming with the first dragons. Whether true or not, they are intimately intertwined with the dragons.
History
According to their legends, dragonborn are descended from the gods of creation and magic and life and light. Their ancient heritage precedes even the founding of Uto Daeg in the
Era of the Outer Realms. In the dismal soup of power and light they were wrought, birthed from draegean mothers and fathers. Their parents gave some of their power until them. Bestowed, these furtive few crawled out of the mire and onto the lands as they dried. And so the dragonborn came to be. The more ambitious hold to this heritage of theirs. Indeed, the king Cryonita can trace his lineage directly back to these primordial "eggs of muck."
The dragonborn eventually grew apart and wandered to where they were best suited: some stayed in the deserts and others traversed the frozen wilds. Others claimed the noxious poison pools and others still claimed open territory to roam and conquer. The dragonborn prefer the powerful Bahamut as their patron, though this is through pride and connection as well as goodness. Not many choose Tiamat for her followers are usually kobolds and other evil things.
Revelation Influence
It must be noted that the dragonborn have their own version of the tale
The First Dragons myth. The myth follows the relatively same story, but in the beginning were the red dragons first and foremost. These red dragons birthed eggs that hatched to the various colored dragonborn.
Many scholars believe this myth is a telling of how they were
Raptured, crawling out of their stupor and into a purpose.
Religion
The dragonborn are ditheists, worshiping only two gods: Bahamut and Tiamat.
They see both as not necessarily Good or Evil but paragons of exemplar behavior and worth idolizing. They worship Bahamut for all his aspects and Tiamat for her view on power and greed.
The clergy and worshipers are not transactional in all things, however. They do uphold justice and hope as well as power and greed. This has influenced their outlook on life to be oriented to what they can get out of situations or interactions while also making sure justice and hope are preserved.
Culture
The dragonborn are clannish. They have their "destined families" that are meant to eventually grow to such power and prestige that they come to alter fate itself for all dragonborn, and most importantly, their family. This process they call "mantling".
The Good dragonborn families who exemplify Bahamut's traits are guards, adventurers, farmers, judges, or officials. "Destined families" are supposed to assist others and they think of the whole society or species and when reaffirming their revealed purpose.
The Evil dragonborn are not so generous and tend to be adventurers, merchants, soldiers, or officials. All done is for the family and pushing the prestige and influence of the family. The highest in these endeavors use their influence to fight proxy wars — never direct conflicts — against their rivals. They believe the "destined families" will be one of these families, of course, and with the apical power will come their apical rule.
It cannot be stressed enough that the dragonborn, either Good or Evil, not work with each other; there are no ethical limits to supporting each other as they see it all as a net positive, either to themselves or to the whole society.
Caste
The dragonborn distinguish themselves between a "higher" and a "lower" ranking system, though it is fallen out of fashion since their dynastic fall. The distinguishing feature is a tail.
Those with a tail are considered "highborn" and those without a tail are "lowborn." The Highborn were closest to their draconic overlords as priests, officials, and guards. Those who were seen as lowly had their tails removed and eventually bred that trait out of the Lowborn genes.
In the modern world these traits persist. No one outside of dragonborn culture knows about the history of this practice though some books do mention it in passing. Nowadays, tailless dragonborn are not seen any differently to others are those with tails, and the tailed dragonborn are seen as "exotic."
Persistent Prejudice
This being said, some monarchic Highborn do consider themselves above the Lowborn and perpetuate the caste system in whatever way they can, including hiring Lowborn as indentured servants or even slaves. Such practices are broken up by governments but these folk find new ways to attain that power.
Magic & Sorcerers
Magic is popular among the dragonborn, having their "draconic heritage" staple verbiage of those who find themselves as sorcerers. Whether chaos-touched or having draconic ancestry or something else, magic would fundamentally be different without the dragonborn.
Naming Conventions
The dragons prefer harsh but polysyllabic, regal names.
