The Diaspora

Powerful mages, sages, and psions seek to escape the terrors of the world by creating elaborate demiplanes and pocket universes.

Relatively unknown to most, but well known to mystics, soothsayers, druids, and witches, is the Diaspora. During the darkest days of the Second Flowering, some of the wisest and most potent minds and talents in the world saw no hope or redemption for the world, and so thought to make their own. Drawing on magics long forgotten in this age, they created demiplanes and pocket universes, ranging from little more than enclosed castles or floating islands in the voice up to creations that were nearly full worlds in their own right. They fled to these artificial realms and closed them off, taking as much as half of the world's population with them.   Those strange new worlds that survived became known on earth as the Diaspora. The people that inhabited them were often among the goodest and wisest of their time, and in the ensuing millennia apart form our world they have developed thoughts and philosophies that are entirely alien to us. Mystics and diviners who know how to reach out to the Diaspora do so in pursuit of their strange wisdom.   The Diaspora was created at a time in which the multiverse was in flux, still growing into its current form, and those who created it did so with knowledge and ways of thinking that no longer exist in our world. Even the great powers of our conventional multiverse, the gods and fiend lords, lack the knowledge of how to find and reach the Diaspora. Only those in traditions that have maintained contact with the minds of the Diaspora, the secret orders and covens, know how to communicate with this rare, strange branch of reality.
