COMPLETED: Ruins of Alborect pt. 2
After many days of sleepless nights David Moore has made several discoveries concerning the sealing chamber in Ruins of Alborect. First, this is not the only location of it's kind and that there should be 6 others just like it. Each chamber holds a crystalline torus which is the anchor point of the seal. Together they were used to seal some Lord of Light, unfortunately David was unable to find any reference to such a deity even in the [The Grand Library. Hoping to find answers to who is actually sealed away and where the other anchor points might be he requisitions the party for another journey out to the Ruins.
Along the way the party stops over at Glik's warren. He accepts the party into the grand hall and they quickly realize that there are many hundreds of kobolds now residing here. This makes the party a bit uneasy but welcomes the hospitality of their host, he gives them a gift they had found amongst a long abandoned dwarven ruin. Travels through the desert go quite smoothly and they arrive at the Ruins without trouble.
Within the ruins it's immediately obvious to Ostreleia that something is off, the energy that once laid dormant beneath the ground is rushing out of some point in the distance. The party begins to cautiously advance, using Mess' familiars as scouts. Several miles from their goal they begin to notice large humanoid creatures tearing at the buildings. Upon closer inspection they seem to be some sort of earth elemental, with the distinct difference of consuming worked stone and adding it to themselves. They try and sneak past these possibly hostile creatures and make it within a mile of the Sealing chamber entrance, they now see this is the source of the creatures. Forms seemingly of pure energy make their way from the chamber and begin integrating stone into their themselves growing as the work their way out. Thinking it may be safer to avoid that entrance they make their way to the chapel entrance they had used to escape from the last time they were here. However David Moore trips alerting the otherwise passive entities to violence. Dispatching the giants they make their way to the chapel entrance without any other conflict.
They make their way through the quiet halls leading to the sealing chamber. Passing the room which contained a portal that they failed to operate last time, notice that it has been activated as the dust has been disturbed. Besides which everything else seemed as it should until they peered into the sealing room itself. The anchor lay shattered and the floor rent beneath the device maintaining the prismatic wall that had served as the anchor's last protection. In it's remains a rent in space and time is the only thing that stands, foreign creatures emerging from it with some regularity.
The party quickly fans out to survey the room. Mess, attempts to determine what happened to the runic circle that housed the prismatic wall. Besides the massive damage around and under the ring he fails to ascertain anything else. Pious searches around for new things to steal, in his search he notices some fresh bodies and that there's something off about them. Ostreleia comes over and helps him figure out why they look so out of place, the bodies have severe stages of necrosis obvious signs of undeath. Araz tries asking David what his thoughts may be concerning the portal, and after many attempts to tell the party he isn't a Planar Researcher he does think back onto something he might be able to build from. Just before several ethereal forms emerge from the portal exclaims that it may be a portal to the Astral Sea, and for a portal to have stabilized so quickly there is likely some mote acting as a tether.
The fight with the amorphous apparitions serves as a reminder that this is still an actively hostile place. The volatile creatures seem to be trying to take on some form, the ones outside only finding stones for it's building blocks while the ones here having access to flesh. The one striking Aethilin hard enough to form an arm from the damage sustained. The party gather together quickly to dispatch the enemies without much more damage.
David Moore is shaken by the creatures, so much so that he encourages the party to try and close the portal, implying that he would be better off staying put. Mess fixes the runic circle, however the magic which powered the device could not be repaired in such a way. Without much further hesitation Mess gathers his familiars and enters the rift. Pious asks Araz to hold his arm as he pokes a head in after him. After realizing that there is no present danger, he pulls Araz in. The two girls decide that they should follow one after the other working out some sign as to whether it's safe or not. Eventually everyone makes it to the other side.
They are met with a room that appears almost identical to the ones that they had just left. At first they see two figures one an elderly man in floor length black robes with gold trim, his long beard tied in a knot as to keep it out of his way. The other is a large angel standing nine and a half feet tall, with hay blonde hair and large wings. When Mess attempts to approach, they flicker out of existence. Almost immediately after the elderly figure is kneeling near the prismatic wall and checking the runes. The image is so clear and Araz attempts to touch it. His hand is stopped by cloth and flesh as real as his own, however the figure makes no reckoning of his existence. Araz starts to believe this world may not follow the same rules as the primaterial plane and begins to float. Mess seeing this tries to get the world to shift again, thinking of when soul anchor was activated. Suddenly the world around them shifts and the angel is standing near the edge of the torus sobbing. She begins an incantation and channels power into the anchor. At this moment a shot of recognition shoots through Araz and he calls out her name in Celestial, "HOLLY!!!" Her eyes meet his and there is a flash of light followed by an immense darkness, the void that had once caught Araz and in it's midst a figure of light. Araz panicking attempts to get the party out through the portal which is nowhere to be seen, Mess tries and brings the party back to where they started. Both end up countering the actions of the other and the all end up in a place of chaos, no path leading straight away and infinite space all around them. In the midst of this chaos a single feature draws their attention, a stone about the size of a softball gathering energy all around it. Araz flies to meet this stone but upon touching it feels the reality of it and falls to a nearby platform. In the distance they see two shapes swimming like fish, however as they approach it's clear that they are two dragons playing, or what one might think a dragon was.
The party is apprehensive as the dragons approach, not knowing whether they are passive or hostile. Pious being as fast as he is runs to meet up with Araz and takes the mote of the Primaterial Plane. Soon after the bluer of the two dragons grabs Araz by his clothes and flings him into the void and the party truly begins to take action. Leia takes the shape of a Giant Eagle and flies to catch Araz just as a cone of frost extends from the White dragon's lips. Leia heals Araz whose first words are "think of home", she wills them back to the party. The white dragon immediately follows while the blue dragon chases Pious. Mess tries and wills everyone back to the sealing chamber but only gets himself there. Aethelin fires volley after volley of deadly arrow, and together are able to bring down the white dragon just as the blue dragon makes it to their platform.
Mess finding himself alone thinks of his friends trying to get them there as well and to his surprise they arrive happy to be out of the situation and so thankful to Mess. One by one they leave through the portal, followed finally by Mess. On the other side he finds himself alone and knows immediately that he had conjured up illusions of his friends to him. Seeing no other choice he goes back and gets himself again into the fight just as Aethelin is knocked down. He tries imagining himself controlling the dragon and a leash forms in his hand, doing nothing but angering the beast which charges Mess. Araz tries to follow Mess' logic and get the whole party out of there by conjuring a carriage to carry them to safety. The blue dragon sees this as an opportunity to gather itself and takes a portion of the thing into it's own body. This only delays the inevitable as it blown out of existence soon after.
Collecting themselves they attempt to heal their wounds with illusory healing potions which at the time do stitch their wounds back together, however immediately after leaving the rift find their wounds back. Bringing the mote back through the portal it begins to destabilize and collapse. Relieved to finally be safe, ominous clapping alerts them as a strange man only recognized to Mess emerge from the door they had taken. Danon addresses the party as bumbling idiots, revealing to them his intent on breaking the seals to release a dying god and that his work here was already done. Mess tries to bring up some history the two of them share and Danon seems almost sympathetic but refuses to speak so candidly in front of the others. Before he leaves he assures them that their paths will cross again, and maybe even by his own doing.
Rattled by Danon's words Mess paces the grounds for the rest of the evening. As the others get settled in, Aethelin decides to determine whether or not the creatures from the Astral Sea were still here even after closing the portal. Unfortunately the creatures remain despite the closure. Watches are made and the party gets some well needed rest.
Pious on first watch sits peacefully as a familiar figure squats beside him, Gaunter. He's ruffled by the soul anchor being broken, and asks whether or not Pious would be willing to help him. Pious obviously distrustful of him asks why he'd want to prevent this god from being released. Gaunter tells him that the sleeping god here is Rageal The Consuming Fire, a god of vengeance and to think how he might act should he be woken up from a millennia long sleep that was brought on by measly humans. Pious continues to ask questions about why he needs him to prevent the seal from being broken, Gaunter only responds that there are certain rules put in place that prevent him from acting to stop the breaking of the anchors. Gaunter promises him anything that he should desire in return for this favor, to which Pious agrees. Upon doing so he gives Pious a mirror with instructions on how to contact him. He attempts to rouse the party to ask any further questions, however before they open their eyes he is gone.
In the morning he relays all that was said, David Moore suggests he may be able to find something further should he return to the [The Grand Library. There doesn't seem to be any further questions, though Aethelin did pick up that he was attempting to hide something from the rest of the party.
David Moore was able to decipher parts of the text inscribed on the ground and with cross referencing a map was able to find the line to where the next anchors were. One points exactly West and the other South-South East, their are no landmarks along the Western line however Hafa does lay along the other.
They are able to navigate themselves back to Greensward without incident. At the Gatehouse a bolstered guard approach the party and informs them of a new tax.
