Darkling
When Nivian, the Dreadful Shadow, appeared in the world, his corrupting influence nearly wiped out the elves. Some elves were altered into drow by his mere presence, and the surviving elves and drow fought to the brink of extinction. In the midst of the mayhem, a new race emerged. Darklings are the offspring of unborn infants that altered in the womb as a result of Nivian's corruption. When Nivian was imprisoned in the Book of Dreadful Shadow, darklings prospered much like elves and drow.
Darklings, unlike their drow cousins, live on the surface, although they prefer to live in secluded tunnels or caves. Their elven ancestors instilled in them a profound appreciation for art and beauty that belies the darkness in which they live. They don't spend much time in the sun and are light sensitive. Darklings are sometimes incorrectly assumed to be the child of a drow and an elf, and while they do share shared ancestors, they are a distinct race. The most obvious example is that a darkling's body absorbs light throughout the course of its existence, blasting forth when it dies, but most darklings, dubbed "The Cursed," also see their features contort into a goblin-like shape as they mature.
