Gith
The Githyanki, who are warlike, and the Githzerai, who are introspective, are two cultures who detest each other. The Githzerai sharpen their brains to a razor's edge in their towering monasteries of academic pursuits, while the ruthless Githyanki are taught as warriors from infancy. However, before the Githyanki and Githzerai separated into separate cultures, these beings were known simply as the gith.
Before Munak, the naive gith king, sold his whole species to Bulir the Envious for twenty generations in exchange for immortality, these towering, gaunt creatures were peaceful and scholarly. Bulir dragged the whole species into The Asylum, enslaved and transformed them, and forced them to work on the demon realm's construction. He divided the race in two, transforming some into Githyanki and using them as guards and overseers against the Githzerai. Munak got to see it all from within a cage hung around Bulir's neck - a cage he still lives in today, immortal but yet still aging and caged for all eternity. The gith were liberated after twenty generations, irreversibly divided and eternally at odds.
The Githyanki's armor and weaponry are adorned with feathers, jewels, diamonds, and precious metals, and their treasured belongings are the famous silver swords with which they slice through their opponents. The Githyanki have become merciless conquerors since their slavery ended, constantly extending their realm.
The Githzerai are focused thinkers and austere ascetics who live lives of rigorous discipline. They are lean and strong, with plain clothes free of adornment, and they maintain their own company, trusting only a few animals other than their own species. The Githzerai have moved as far away from their warlike Githyanki relatives as they can, living on secluded islands and keeping as far away from other races as they can, bent on collecting knowledge and remaining as self-sufficient as possible.
As a result of their continual conflict, the Githyanki are more often observed among the other races. For a variety of causes, far more Githyanki are expelled from their warlike culture than their reclusive relatives. Among adventuring groups and mercenary bands, such outcasts frequently find an outlet for their more violent impulses.
Githzerai, on the other hand, seldom leave their enclaves unless they are engaged in intellectual pursuits. A Githzerai spotted out in the world is most likely on a learning trip and may join an adventurous party as a kind of protection.
