Immortality
Though some species and beings have something akin to immortality, for example the extreme long life and apparently eternal youth of devils, true immortality can only be granted by the gods, and even then it requires the permission of Gama or Eruer.
However, to most Valinians, the technicalities of true immortality are a matter of semantics. A being that is possessed of life apparently dating back to the earliest days of Valine or one that possesses apparently limitless youth may well be referred to as immortal with some justification from the perspective of mortal beings - even those who live for two or three centuries.
Causes
True immortality can only be granted by a god (even a demigod cannot grant such a gift). The perceived immortality of the perpetually youthful and extremely long lived, however, can come from arcane or natural sources.
Cultural Reception
Immortal creatures are the stuff of legend. Whether feared, admired, or even worshipped very few beings achieve even the appearance of immortality and such a gift puts them at a level of existence that most cultures, and certainly the individuals within them, only encounter in stories.
