The Dragon Cull
When Gama created Valine, the first intelligent species that she populated the world with was the dragons. When she and Eruer began to populate Valine with humanoids, the eldest of the humanoid races was the dragonborn. How, precisely, the dragonborn came to be dominant over the dragons is uncertain - perhaps by divine decree, perhaps the newcomers had some advantage over the larger creatures that is lost to time. For a period of nearly twenty years, however, the dragonborn ruled over the dragons.
The two species viewed the situation very differently. The dragonborn saw the dragons as trusted subjects. Something akin to a mix between partners and pets. A slightly lower class of being in a burgeoning dominance over Valine, perhaps, but nonetheless a key factor in the ascendancy of the draconic to primacy on Valine over the other elder species- the elves, gith, dwarves and Fey.
On the other hand, the dragons quickly grew to resent the humanoids that held sway over them. As the hubris of the dragonborn grew, so did the acrimony between the two species. The dragonborn remained largely unaware of the situation, ignoring any warnings that came and dismissing them as aberrations in their inevitable ascendancy over the other species.
When the dragons turned on them, then, it came as a complete surprise to most. Swiftly, efficiently, and devastatingly the dragons all but wiped out the entire dragonborn species in a single day. Left broken, paranoid and largely without resources, those that survived banded together in small tribes, sticking to their own color and kind - green Dragonborn with green, copper with copper, red with red and so forth.
The dragonborn do their best to suppress knowledge of the Dragon Cull and it remains a significant event that is not widely known or discussed in Valinian history. Perhaps because of this has come the misconception that dragonborn are descended from dragon - a misconception the dragonborn do not do much to correct. nearly a thousand years on, however, the event still stings, perhaps even amplified by generations of oral history handed down in secret amongst the species.
