The Whisperbound Coast

Battered by the elements, and hemmed in by treacherous frozen mountains, the Whisperbound Coast is a section of the south-east coastline of Arctirime roughly two hundred miles in length and ten miles wide (at its broadest point).   Sited across the Sea of Whispers from northern Vallanna, the coast is home to the hardy tribal folk known as the Grimscar, whose practice of violently securing valuable goods, minerals and occasional prisoners through marauding raiding fleets has plagued the people of northern Aetrun for centuries.

Geography

A narrow strip of land, consisting of imposing cliffs, fjords and windswept tundra, the coastline rises from the Sea of Whispers to meet the ever-present Barrier Mountains which guard the interior of Arctirime.   Numerous rivers criss-cross the Whisperbound Coast, falling down from the Barriers to meet the sea, many of which are frozen in winter and swelled to bursting during the summer thaws, making travel across the region extremely hazardous.

Fauna & Flora

Trees are scarce in the frigid region, and plantlife is limited to a number of grasses, shrubs and bushes. Despite this, a variety of animal life makes their home in the region. Herds of reindeer graze the plains, hunted by packs of wolves, and occasional larger predators. Smaller rodents and mammals are relatively common; among them the native Horned Whisperbound Rabbit - an occassionally domesticated rabbit-like herbivore, around the size of dog, with bony antlers protruding between their ears.

History

For many centuries, the Whisperbound Coast has been home to the Grimscar people - a semi-nomadic tribal people. The Grimscar have a strong maritime tradition, supplementing the meagre food that can be found on the mainland with their prodigious skill at fishing. This seamanship has a darker side, as the Grimscar are well known throughout the various lands bordering the Sea of Whispers as vicious raiders; often striking both shipping and undefended coastal villages with an eye towards taking what they need to survive.
