Salsvault
Through wind-whipped snow and biting cold, we finally found the half-submerged, dark-blue stone building poking up through the ice. Honjou's death hit me harder than I thought. I almost got us lost. Thank the gods that sweet pup's big sister has a helluva nose on her. We traced the smell of sulphur to those ice demons that hang around the ruins. As we approached the familiar looking gray stone door carved to look like a face with a half-exposed skull, the same pup translated the ancient tongue like it was nothing. Scribed above the door is the word “SALSVAULT” she said. I wonder what it means? The following are notations from the same journal.—Journal of Obel Mustave
Purpose / Function
Salsvault has been speculated to have been a gathering place of First One's druids or other types of magic users. Whether this was an enclave, a research lab, or a school remains unknown.
Aside: My money's on druids!
Sensory & Appearance
- The cold of Salsvault is strong enough to bite its way into one's very soul. Protective weather gear is neccessary to explore these dungeon.
- If one cannot find Salsvault, they need only to follow the scent of sulpher. Ice Mephits are attracted to the area, seeming to seek vials of an ancient disease housed inside.
- On entering the building, we noted the strange sensation of being off balance, caused by the building's tilt backward into the waters of Thin Sheets.
Denizens
So far, our group has found:
- Ice Mephites
- Zombies
- Undead Snakes
- Animated Armour
- An angry rug
Architecture
The achitecture is typical of that of its era: crated most likely using magic to carve it into the very black and blue stone of the area. The structure itself is remarkably well presevered, perhaps due to the freezing temperatures of the Frost Territories, or the traces of abjuration magic Honjou and I detected on our first visit. It seems to be radiating directly from the walls and doors of Salsvault.
Defenses
These ruins are abundant in protection methouds, but I hesitate to call them true "traps". It is true that the group of young adventures and myself found a chest full of undead snakes that attacked Sweet, but to be fair, it seemed like they were guarding someone's life savings. There was even a warning etched on the chest in the ancient language.
Additionally, there were those animated suits of armour that ran Honjou and I out of the ruins on our first visit. They seemed to be possessed by some kind of water spirit, and the armour that they wore was stone, and very worn down with age. They also wore some sort of smithing tools on their waists.
And then there was a very angry rug that attacked that sweet pup, Whimsy.
