The Ashen Wastes

Once fields of tall grass, the Ashen Wastes are a destitute, gray wasteland devoid of all but the most vicious and violent creatures. Across its breadth lie massive, shattered arches of grey, scorched stone. Once considered beautiful relics of Eclorea, their charred surfaces, visible from miles, are a horrifying reminder of the destruction wrought on the wilderness.
There aren't any roads that pass through the Ashen Wastes and only one follows several miles from its northern border, tracing its way down to Tomokan.
The leading archaeological theory, held by the brightest minds in Academia, is that the creatures of the Ashen Wastes were awoken by the torment the fields endured. They suspect that the creatures are simply guarding the presumably magic arches across its landscape.
Though there hasn't been a plan designed to fix the arches - let alone face the monstrosities within - Academia believes, if restored, the arches may serve as portals to other planes of existence.
