The Clans

Origins of the Monster Hunters

Almost as ancient as the vampires they have pursued for millenia, the hunter Clans see themselves as having a duty to protect mortals from those who would do them harm. Whether vampire, wolfkin, witch, or even another hunter, most take this task with utmost seriousness. Thanks to the aid of an ancient ritual and their Sect allies, each Clan is granted the strength and speed to allow them to combat their ancient foes.

NERUGAL

Around 5000 BC in what would later become southern Iraq, Neruĝal witnessed the vampire Wardu kill his mother. His hunt for Wardu formed much of the first knowledge upon how to kill a vampire. At some point Neruĝal met with an ancestor of the Scherer Sect and began the long tradition of the Clan/Sect allegiance. Most modern slayers of the Clan go by the surname Neru.

ALKINA

When those his half-brother Neruĝal had gathered together were nearly wiped out by a group of vampires only five years after they'd begun, Alkina began gathering his own group and learning from Neruĝal's knowledge. This family connection has persisted throughout the centuries and the two Clans are still closely tied together as well as sharing their Scherer ally. Through a show of their joint force, between 1309-1311 AD the Alkina and Neruĝal nearly wiped out the Simus Line. Most modern slayers of the Clan go by the surname Alkin.

KOSHO

Two millennia after Alkina and Neruĝal began, Kosho witnessed the slaughter of her entire village at the hands of the vampire Hairan as a child. Though she and the other children from the village were spared, she never forgot Hairan or the slaughter. Gathering knowledge that she passed on to her children and grandchildren, the Clan officially began hunting with her grandchildren when they finally tracked down Hairan. At some point in time they encountered the ancestors of the Otto Sect and have been allied with them since.

CORANUS

Livius Coranus watched vampires Kebu and Senh murder his family a millennia and a half after the Kosho Clan rose. Saved by an Alkina slayer, he was officially adopted by the Clan but later left to branch out on his own, eventually helped by the Ollyett Sect. Their acclaim amongst the Clans rose swiftly over the following centuries and they are regarded as having been the absolute best - none other has yet achieved the feats they did or the amount of kills. In 1847 AD, however, the Clan was being torn apart by internal turmoil and called a grand meeting of all members to sort everything out. This allowed the vampire Malloy to destroy their headquarters by barricading the exits and setting the building on fire. As of today, no slayers of the Coranus Clan are known to have survived.

SMITH

Nearly two millennia after Coranus, Alexander Smith came home to find his wife halfway through the process of being Turned - delirious and slowly dying. After coming close to dying himself when she attacked him, he ended up killing her in self-defense. Searching for answers to what had happened had him crossing paths with a Hancock witch and beginning the long bond with the Sect. And since the fall of the Coranus Clan, the Smith Clan has risen to claim the top spot - though never quite reaching the heights of their predecessor.

BONGAM

Just three years after Smith went looking for answers, Gwilim Bongam found a note left by his daughter Elisabeth detailing her disappearance with the vampire Cnaea Abella. Distraught and angry at her being stolen away, he sought help and found it in Symon Mufhet, cementing the tie between Clan and Sect. Many years later, father and daughter reunited and she was officially declared a member of the Clan. Because of this precedence, they are the only Clan to openly still consider Turned members as still being part of the Clan. Most modern slayers of the Clan go by the surname Bonham.

HOLT

Almost two hundred years after Bongam, Miranda Holt witnessed her husband being killed by an unknown vampire - not even for his blood but as merely a murder for pleasure. She spent the rest of her life trying to find out who he was and hunt him down but to no avail. All that came of her efforts was her Clan and their ties with the Cornwall Sect, making them the only slayers to respect the shapeshifting witches.

WOLFE

The youngest of the Clan because of a mere thirty year difference between them and Holt, the Wolfes are perhaps the proudest of the Clans. They are also the only ones with a direct connection to one of the Sects. Daniel Wolfe brought the Clan together after his wife, Lynda Ward, was killed by a vampire later identified as one of the Elders, Djal. He had never intended to have a large role when she spoke of forming her kin into a larger group as the Mufhets had but with her death, he sought revenge. Marriage between Clan and Sect has become something of a tradition now and while there are a few Wards born slayers and Wolfes born witches, many more are born with the abilities of both in some fashion
