The Dragon's Breath
The Dragon’s Breath is not a knightly order like The Devoted of Hermes — in fact, many elders insist that the group does not exist at all — but stories persist of small groups of hunters who travel the country dispensing summary judgments on those Kindred who have incurred the order’s wrath. The Dragon’s Breath concerns itself with members of the covenant who have violated their sacred oaths. Typically this involves former members who have deserted the order and tried to share its higher mysteries with the unworthy, though supposedly they have also been employed against spies from other covenants and even other supernatural entities who have threatened the order’s interests.
The job of the Dragon’s Breath is to execute the judgment of the elders of the order, and that judgment is nearly always death. Their favored weapon is fire or sunlight, and they take great pains to leave no traces of their activities whatsoever. Like the Dragon’s breath, their touch is invisible and deadly.
It is not known how the Dragon’s Breath chooses its members — clearly they are forbidden to speak of their duties, even to other members of the covenant. It is believed that they are all drawn from the Sworn of the Axe, but even this is only supposition. What rewards these members gain from participation in this grim, secretive cabal is the subject of wild speculation, but of greater concern is the price these relentless assassins must pay in terms of their Humanity. How long can these hunters practice cold-blooded murder before they become little more than killing machines? And once they’ve reached that dreadful nadir, how can the order reliably control them? If the elders know, it is a mystery they keep to themselves.
