The Misericordia
The other two aspects of the Will are secret, although every subject of The Invictus realizes that they must exist — and that wise Kindred doesn’t speculate about such things. The first are the Misericordia, the elite troubleshooters and “cleaners” sent by the Inner Circle to solve problems by whatever means necessary. Minor issues like inter-clan intrigues and Carthian agitators aren’t worth Misericordia attention — that’s what proctors and Sanctified crusaders are for.
The Misericordia focus on the important things, problems that threaten the stability of The Invictus, the Sanctity of The Traditions or the protection of the Masquerade. If the mortal media have pieced together clues to the existence of the Kindred, if rival Kindred drug czars are engaging in open warfare on city streets, if rebellion is brewing in the corridors of power rather than back alleys and nightclubs, then the Misericordia is charged with cleaning the mess up and making sure the problem goes away. This can mean killing everyone involved, but generally doesn’t — murder is an acceptable tool, but it’s not the only one or the best one for all circumstances.
A Misericordia agent must be able to negotiate a truce, erase a paper trail, discredit a respected journalist and blackmail a Judex — and be ready and able to shed mortal and Kindred blood. All of these acts must also be done in secret, hidden from enemy covenants and the subjects of The Invictus, because The Invictus should be considered so infallible that such problems would never occur in the first place. Misericordia agents are highly skilled, highly capable Kindred, infinitely resourceful and unswervingly dedicated — if James Bond was real, undead and stripped of his sense of humor, he might qualify to join their number.
