Armiaka

header by Dmitry Dubinsky
There is a stillness here. When I was a child, I hated it. The nights were quiet, and the days felt akin to a dream. Now, after the world outside has had its way with me, I feel grateful for the calm Armiaka brings. Nothing really changes here, you could be gone for a day, a year, a decade, or even a century. You step your foot back in and it feels like home again. Like you've never really left.
— journals of Captain Anetta Zurek

Government

Armiaka is governed by a matron of the sisterhood of shards, whose job lies in making sure the townsfolk remain safe and happy. As Armiaka lies along the coast, a lot of effort goes into making sure the fishing trade is efficient and profitable. Laws and regulations on fish, how much they are worth and the tax on selling them are updated so regularly, that there is a position in Armiaka for a clerk whose entire job is to deliver the up to date regulations. This often results in heated discussions outside of the town hall.

Defences

The local matron, Wioletta Kujawska stands as the first line of defense of the town alongside two arcane heart golems, which the priestess has made herself. They can be found patrolling the town throughout the day. The two golems have been lovingly named Maciek and Wacek by the locals. Alongside this, the town has a functioning guard with 20 active members.

Industry & Trade

The town of Armiaka makes most of its trade in fishing and hunting. Large amounts of produce are shipped off to the city of Szyla Nora each month to help support the population. Alongside this, the town stocks large amount of ritual components and supplies, around half of which is exported outside of the town.

Infrastructure

Armiaka is the perfect representation of the Sylvar countryside living. Sturdy wooden homes with flowery patterns and painted red doors make up the majority of this quiet, rural town. In the town centre stands a stone statue of a Sylvar couple mid kiss. A couple’s first kiss beneath it is said to bring good luck to a blooming romance. The statue is often decorated with the years current blooms, and the monthly rituals are held around it each month. The town also has it's own Local Goods Arcane Transportation Centre (or a L.G.A.T.C). Most of the trade goods kept in the town are teleported out through this large building, operated by young conjurers. The seashore in Armiaka is home to a couple of small shrines and half destroyed structures made of seashells. None of the locals seem to know where such things came from, or who may have built them, but the most educated guess comes from the Matron Wioletta herself, who considers the structures remnants of Vod'lagha structures.

Assets

  • Biala Kura: A local inn, ran by Kazimierz Glaska and his wife, Arletta and their two children. Being the only inn in town, Biala kura receives plenty of patronage. Thankfully, its size can accommodate the town’s merrymen and then some. Built out of strong oak wood, the establishment has three floors. The first floor is where drinks and food are served on tables decorated with hand embroidered tablecloths. Upstairs is a balcony and a set of rooms available for hire, and above that is the family’s home. Biala Kura proudly offers a large selection of home brewed alcohol and hearty, Sylvar meals suitable for any stomach.
  • Potion-ski: An alchemists ran by a Dorozi gentleman in his forties. He considers the name of his shop to be extremely clever, and will ask any newcomers whether or not they “get it.” The shop definitely stands out in the town square, with saloon doors which he installed in shortly after his arrival. D’ali specialises in selling explosives, battle elixirs and other such concoctions; a business that was rather slow for the majority of his stay, but one that has picked up in popularity thanks to the military presence in the town.
  • Maja’s Dar: Armiaka’s very own bath-house.Here, travellers and locals alike can enjoy a soak in fine bubble baths and oils to relax worked muscles and sore feet. For an extra price, food and drink can be provided. Private and group baths are available, as well as some discretion for the more concerned individuals. A sign does hang at the front window, informing all customers that paying for companionship of the service staff is absolutely not allowed and will result in a life long ban.

  • Dominik’s Blacksmithing: The local Blacksmith graduated from the craftsmen’s guild of Szyla Nora. Since the appearance of the army in Armiaka, Dominik has seen much business and has taken time to purchase new tools, as well as better materials. Now he is capable of forging master worked steel into most desirable forms. Enchantments, are sadly not yet available, as Dominik has not a single magical bone in his body.
  • Trinkets and Baubles: A Dorozi woman, Aisha Gazhari runs this small establishment. A woman in the twilight of her life, she likes to surprise young Sylvar with her sharp wit and good shooting arm. Whilst she pushes on 80, thanks to the sisterhood of the shards she has been taken care of splendidly, and her eyesight is good as new. Something she uses to keep her business open. Her modest building stands in the market square; it used to be ran by her husband and herself, but he sadly met his end in the scar some years ago. She has a love for young soldiers, and often indulges in shooting competitions with D’ali, the owner of Potion-ski.
  • Dziki Dzik: The local hunters emporium. Here, Armiaka’s foresters, foragers and hunters sell their goods. Anything from local berries, wood for fires, various animal parts, meat and hides.
  • The temple of shards: The temple in Armiaka is a beautiful wooden structure with a glass roof. Here, locals come to pray and meditate, seek medical and spiritual aid, or consult the broken mother. All children of the town also attend literacy and numeracy classes here, and in case of an emergency, the townsfolk can hide beneath the temple grounds.

Geography

The sleepy town of Armiaka is situated on the far eastern coast of Sylmaneth, bordering the The Lunar Scar. Sitting on the coast, the town experiences warm and colourful summers and snowy winters. The rolling hills and forest surrounding the town creates a picturesque image, often used in postcards and colourful descriptions of the countryside. Aside from the sea, there is really only one way to enter the town, which is through the main gate situated on the southern side of the town. The town has access to a river from the western side, and a small pond by the entrance gate.

I quite like the opening quote here, really paints a nice image of the town. I don't think I've seen anyone list out specific shops and buildings in a settlement this way either, it adds some nice context and fleshes out the place!
