As a young Kenku, he possessed an insatiable curiosity and a natural talent for tinkering. His fascination with intricate devices and shiny objects led him to seek knowledge and apprenticeship at the university.
Cogwing was taken in as an apprentice by a skilled Gnome tinkerer named Professor Gearfizzle. Under Gearfizzle's guidance, Cogwing honed his mechanical skills and discovered his passion for artifice. The professor recognized Cogwing's potential and nurtured his talent, teaching him the delicate balance of magic and machinery.
However, despite his progress, Cogwing's penchant for shiny things became an obsession. He couldn't resist the allure of sparkling treasures and began taking small trinkets from fellow students and the university's collections. When his actions were discovered, the university expelled him in disgrace.
Desperate to survive and find his place in the world, Cogwing fell in with the notorious Bain Crime Family known for their underground activities. His small size and nimble nature made him an ideal member for executing heists, infiltrating secure locations, and handling intricate explosives.
Within the criminal organization, Cogwing quickly became known as the gadgets and explosives expert. His ability to craft specialized tools and devices made him indispensable to the gang's operations. He honed his skills in secrecy, using his natural talent for mechanical ingenuity to create gadgets that enabled the gang's successful heists and evaded capture.
While Cogwing was drawn into a life of crime, he never forgot his initial aspirations for redemption. Deep down, he yearned to break free from the clutches of the criminal underworld and use his talents for a more noble purpose.
