House Drakis

An extinct House, who were once Lords of Ashfield in The Shield. Their banner was a fiery red covered with a spot-pattern of ash flakes. A serpent eye sat in the center, yellow in color. During this House's prime, they were also closely allied with House Blackblade.

History

The Drakis House faced extinction a little over 15 years ago after the Inferno of Souls battle that left but one survivor, Sir Hasting of the Inferno. The battlefield was on the ruins of an old Rottcolt outpost now simply known as the Inferno, in the middle of the Firelands of Ember. This was very close to the town of Ashfield, a town bordering the Firelands and the Shield. As ordered by the Emperor, all of Drakis’ bannermen fought in the Inferno, and died there. Following that, the pure magical power that had been unleashed in souls and sulfur, caused one of the worst firestorms in the history of the Firelands. A Burnstorm was caused by the battle, and the sulfur from the battle caused the storm to ignite, following the same fundamentals as Soulomancy, which ravaged the countryside.
After the Inferno, House Drakis held only the Lady of Ashfield, Khelsie Drakis, and their two children, one a young man who had fled the battle before it even began, Sir Gorlanor Drakis, and the other a child girl named Merion Drakis. Ashfield’s population took a massive hit as all the fighting men died, many others killed during the firey storms, and suddenly Ashfield had no food or gold to speak of.
In the tentative peace since the Great Settling, Ashfield had become the center of trade with the Ember Dominance, but that was cut off with the rebellion, and the post-rebellion support sent by the Iron Spear went into Gorlanor’s pocket instead of the towns economy. Sir Gorlanor became a depressed gambler, wasting away all the town’s Auries and running it into the ground. He sold the land out to other Houses in exchange for ludicrously small amounts of gold that he could continue gambling with. He became known as the Dice Drakis for his love of gambling with dice, intent on restoring his House to its former glory before the Inferno with a big win, but ended up losing everything else it had. Traders stopped going to Ashfield, and the commonfolk suffered, the majority of the town falling into a deep depression and poverty.
A couple notable figures that suffered through the Ashfield depression are Guele and Ilfreen, who lost their jobs and had to live on the street with their infant daughter, Valeris. Eventually, the lowborn revolted against the bad leadership, and attacked the Drakis household. The revolt escalated quickly when Sir Gorlanor ordered his bannermen to fight back, and some lowborn died. The crowd turned into a frenzy. They pulled out Lady Khelsie Drakis and murdered her, spreading her body through the streets. Gorlanor and Merion got out, and laid low in the town for a few days. Gorlanor then sold Merion to a whorehouse to pay for safe passage out of Ashfield. She was still very young and trusted her older brother and went willingly. Merion was brutally raped to death in the whorehouse by people still angry at Drakis after they found out who she was. Gorlanor got to Hero’s Rest off her sister's coin and lived off old favors in the slums of the great city, until Guele came upon him. To understand Guele's motivations, the history of Morgault must be read.

Guele took Gorlanor in as a friend. Since barely surviving the Ashfield depression, Guele had worked his way up from the literal bottom of Hero's Rest to become a well-respected asset to many nobles in the city. He used him as a tool and manipulated Gorlanor into being a figurehead for Guele's own noble plans, and brought about the construction of Drakis Hold. Then, when Guele was a friend of all the nobles, and had singlehandedly helped the hopeless Gorlanor retrieve back his lost wealth, he slew him. Thus ended the Drakis House. Now, Morgault rule Drakis Hold.
