Culture
Previously seen as barbarians, Tarbor has had to work hard to achieve a good standing among other noble Houses. They are ambitious and not afraid to do what they see as right. This has tended towards the people of this House being confrontational in nature, and abrasive to some, or refreshingly honest to others. The traditional naming conventions originating from the yellow survivors has been maintained, but the rest is kept to history books and art. House Tarbor act, think and are just like every other Iron House in the modern day.
History
Although the history of House Tarbor technically starts during the Great Settling, when the Iron Kingdom pushed south for the first time and found the forgotten Arrowhead Lake, the origins of the people themselves can be traced back further.
During the Yellow Campaign, as Veler and Glorius waged a holy crusade over the face of the Empire, there was an event known as the Mad Wizard incident. Quintus was of the Sacrim tribe alongside Glorius and fought alongside him and Veler for years during the Yellow Campaign. During these battles, he found himself capable of expelling souls and became one of the first Soulomancers, although in those days they were mages, or wizards.
Once a formidable ally to Veler, Quintus kept attempting to gain more and more power, believing his gift of Soulomancy to be just that, a gift. Quintus the Mad lost control of the innumerous souls within and became another of the crazed creatures that Glorius and Veler were fighting against in the Yellow Campaign. Quintus became the thing he had dedicated his entire life to killing. Worse even. He killed thousands of his once comrades after he snapped and before he was put down by Veler. The battle between the Mad Wizard and Veler was fought in the Thundering Flats next to the Lake that would later become the settlement of Banes. Unfortunately, there were pockets of humanity living along the Arrowhead lakeside, drawn to the water there rife with fish and plants. These are the ones that suffered in the battle the most. The survivors became the nobles of House Tarbor.
The yellow scars in Tarbor's banner represent the event, although the details of why were lost to history for centuries before historians connected the two, as the surviving people living on the shore of the Arrowhead Lake took to barbarically marking their banners with dragged fingers of yellow, the blood of the crazed monsters killed by Veler and Glorius in that great catastrophe. They did not mean to create iconography, but the symbolism of the creatures of the Dark Father and their strange yellow blood, as well as the yellow explosions of power from Quintus the Mad were not forgotten in the simple minds of the Tarbor ancestors. The few survivors of that event were: Ir, Ad, Id, La, Ar, and Li. These are the names they have been recorded as, and passed down through the future generations of the Tarbor House as honorary first names with slight alterations seen above.
When the Great Settling of Iron, led by King Paramonus, lead to the South Exodus, Banes was discovered by Iron Pilgrims after a long absence since the events of the Mad Wizard. Since the end of the Yellow Campaign, the Sacrim tribe had transformed into the Glore House and created the Iron Kingdom on Old Iron, living as a mythical and philosophical people, the survivors of the Yellow Campaign in Tarbor had formed a different kind of society. The descendants of those that survived were remembered, and idealized, treated like noblemen would be in an Iron House, despite the rest of the society being much more barbaric/rudimentary in nature. There was no currency in Banes, and no real language either, but there was a clear hierarchy. The Iron Pilgrims were stunned by this, seeing it as a sign of their current House system as being true and holy, if it could be replicated by even these followers of Veler. The barbaric people were 'tamed' and integrated into the Iron Kingdom, shown currency and values and Iron-esque clothing, for a short time before the Southern Exodus was abandoned after King Paramonus fell ill. The Tarbor people, and the other factions of the newly settled Flats, were seperated, but many of people of the Kingdom remained in Banes alongside them, likewise trapped on all sides by the roaming Lost. Over the years of isolation that followed, the Tarbor people would advance alongside their new Iron friends, and the Ironers would become more natural, and lax. Old customs were maintained, and the Iron Creed spread.
When the Ashenblight plague ravaged the new Iron Empire, Emperor Calavius began the re-settlement of the Thundering Flats. Banes was found once again, the new society there a strange in-between of both old Iron Kingdom culture and Blood Age tribal systems. But, particularly due to the conversion of Tarbor to the Iron Creed during the abandonment, these people were welcomed into the new Empire, which they joined eagerly. The House-like system of nobility that ran in Banes was similar enough to the Empire's system, that they were declared an Iron House and Lords of Banes. The nobles continue the lineage of those few survivors of the Yellow Campaign, but since the re-settlements, have grown more and more integrated into the Iron Empire's culture, and their past is but a fragment of what it once was.
