Kingshill Bastion
Kingshill Bastion is a Chivalierian motte-and-bailey castle located in the Arthurian town of Beckinsdale. It was initially built in the year 28, however, construction continued for a number of years, with the castle being expanded significantly. Kingshill Bastion has been regarded as a crucial defensive location in Foven, and west Arthuria as a whole, due to the infrequency of other fortifications in the surrounding area.
Purpose / Function
Kingshill Bastion was initially constructed as a relatively small homestead for the successful Ouronan merchant Alexandra Crowe. After amassing a fortune through trade she sought to emigrate to Arthuria, seeking new opportunities and a new way of life. She requested architects and builders to continue expanding her home until it reached the size of a castle. Throughout the time of its main function being a home, Alexandra frequently hosted the local nobility, which led her to develop a strong web of political relations.
During times of war and conflict, Kingshill Bastion served as a highly defendable area, which encouraged a significant amount of local citizens to move to the surrounding area so the castle's walls could protect them if danger became present. As such, the castle's purpose shifted to become a shield for the local community that had begun to develop. As time continued, the dwellings and farmland continued to expand, and more and more new citizens were attracted to the area. For a time the castle served as the location of rulership over the town, up until a formal government was implemented and a town mayor appointed, resulting in Alexandra Crowe no longer being the defacto leader.
The political significance of Kingshill can be said to have deteriorated from then onwards. With it no longer serving as the centre of political decision-making, it mostly reverted to being a home for Alexandra Crowe and her family. Despite this, the Crowe family remained as significant figures in local politics, due to their wealth and nobility status. The Crowe family is said to have been responsible for much of the initial growth in the local town, and it is argued by many that the town of Beckinsdale would likely not exist if it was not for the funding and investment implemented by the Crowe family into local projects.
The War of the Pheonix had a minimal impact on Beckinsdale. Many citizens went to war, and many of those did not return, but there were few situations in which the town faced any direct conflict. Kingshill Bastion mostly acted as somewhat of a training ground for a large number of local soldiers before they were sent to battles across the Chivalier Isles.
