Sea Shanty: Spirits of the Sea

A song sung for generations across the oceans of Venya by sailors and pirates alike. The origins of the song date back to the beginning of the Age of Strife and tells of a clan who lived upon a distant isle to the north. They struck a bargain with the spirits of the sea for prosperity, though the singer laments the choice, for it was his love that was chosen as a sacrifice, never to again feel the land beneath her feet, cursed to sail the ocean's surface and depths forever in their service.

Spirits of the Sea Shanty

On the land of dragon and sun there was,
None of food and plenty.
With naught to teach or guide them on,
they called to the sea intently.
With promises of wealth and gold,
An answer came shortly.
One of hope and pain it caused,
for what they asked was costly.

Oh, we know, we know, never trust those below,
The spirits of the sea, take what they can, and you'll be serving them below.

When came the spirits of the sea,
They brought their guarantee.
A life must be given willingly,
to grant this harmony.
And so it came, to my heart,
chosen for this role.
And so we set out lives apart,
Though it broke my soul.

Oh, we know, we know, never trust those below,
The spirits of the sea, take what they can, and you'll be serving them below.

She bade us on and set to the sea,
Yingying of my heart.
But out on the waves you live so free,
Never to disembark.
So I sit and stare at the waves,
lost and alone.
Feeling the approach of my grave,
Forever on my own.

Sail free, sail far, love of my heart,
Working, for the spirits of the sea eternally, you'll be serving them below.
