Drowned Regrets

The Drowned Regrets is a popular inn found in Graintown. While the district remains somewhat squalid and unsuitable for higher establishments due to the modest income of its inhabitants, the Drowned Regrets is a popular pub of the place and was still made for the people of the district to enjoy themselves at their leisure.

Purpose / Function

The Drowned Regrets serves as a simple bar and pub for people to indulge in. It is focused primarily on the slaves, whom receive free services if they are capable of proving themselves as a Grain. It is also an inn -- a service which, while not free, is quite cheap and affordable to any man that managed to scrounge a dropped silver or two from the pavement.

Design

The interior of the room is wide and somewhat rectangular in shape; overall, most of the room follows a nautical theme, with several port-hole decorations found on the interior of the building. Entrances can be found on the sides of the building; double-wide doors, while port-hole windows are found lining the sides. Despite its decent aesthetic, The Drowned Regrets still keeps its reputation as a very seedy and undesirable inn.

Sensory & Appearance

The Drowned Regrets is frequently filled with the muttering murmurs of its patrons, along with the occasional raucous exchange between two outraged gamblers. Due to being the only real tavern with affordable prices for Slaves or the lower class, it's no surprise for people to be found here quite literally drowning their regrets. Patrons may be found passed out upon the tables or floors, the stink of vomit or sweat frequently fills the air.

Denizens

Slaves and seedy, low-class prostitutes both frequently can be found working within the Drowned Regrets. While Krev does not prohibit prostitution, he does prohibit the building to be used for it. Mercenaries stop by occasion here, and it's absolutely no secret that rats frequent the establishment. 'Bilge rats', as Krev sometimes calls them. He doesn't mind the company of the creatures, for they devour any cockroach or insect that happens to come near them.   Krev: The bartender and owner. Krev is a monstrously large man that stands just a few inches short of seven feet tall. He stays at the bar quite often, and is known for being a man of few words. Still, Krev is quite nice and treats others with respect, so long as they can withstand his crude and brusque demeanor.   Piper: A lithe and frail man who's true name is unknown. Piper is merely an alias to describe the man's fondness of rats. He's a young low-class teenager that serves as one of Krev's bartenders. Piper trains the rats he finds in the establishment -- or at the very least tries to. Piper is very scrawny and small, with black hair that falls limp on his shoulders despite his age. His nose is squashed and bent while his lips are thin, his eyes deep-set and almond in shape and colour.   Saif:A man that makes a living by killing. He's a very well known butcher in Graintown; though his crimes go unnoticed thanks to both the negligence of Graintown's security, and the people's fear of his prowess. He often appears here at the late hours to set up any potential contracts. Saif is bald headed, but young, his hair simply shaved and removed. He lacks any facial hair, while his face is triangular in shape.

Contents & Furnishings

The interior of the Drowned Regrets is best described as 'modest'...by Grain's standards. Despite the rats, the place is generally kept clean and well-maintained. Some barrels are used in place of chairs or tables, which Krev claims to be fit for the theme of the pub. Ropes and 'pulleys' are found lining some walls of the place, while the bar itself can be found next to a small walkway leading towards the stairs. The walkway is outlined by a mast that includes tattered, somewhat dusty and stained white sails, that can be rolled up or lowered as needed.   Krev's bar is known for having a huge hole in the back in place of an actual service area for his chefs to rely on. The hole hasn't been repaired, because it 'adds atmosphere'.

Menu

Arrak:A special alcoholic beverage fermented from coconut's milk or sap from the flowers. 4 Silvers   Pitch: The infamous 'pitch' or 'tar' is a thick, black substance of Krev's devising. It's an exceptionally strong alcoholic beverage, though it's unknown as to what gives it this look. The taste is often likened to charcoal, but is very strong. 2 Silvers.   Mash: Mash is made directly in the Drowned Regrets. Krev doesn't bother mentioning what is actually in the mash, but guarantees there is at least 'some meat' in it. The mash comes in the form of squares. 2 Silvers.   Potluck Pottage: Similar to mash; Krev doesn't ever bother mentioning what is in the pottage. Fortunately, the pottage isn't left made and running all day, unlike most of the stews found across Graintown. Pottage is prepared for the day using what ingredients they find, and typically has identifiable pieces of meat. If you're lucky, you might just get veggies. 4 Silvers.   Oatmeal: Made with millet, and occasionally dates. 3 Silvers.   Mystery Meat: Grilled and cooked. The 'mystery meat' is actually one of the few things that Krev will disclose; it's from the rats found in the inn.

Architecture

The Drowned Regrets resembles a rather simple theme; it follows a bit of a nautical themeing and sticks out of Graintown like a sore thumb. The building itself is crafted of palm wood chopped from the nearby forests, and is among the only wooden buildings found within the area. It's also one of the few two story buildings; it resembles a wooden lodge of sorts, with the wood bent and shaped like an upturned ship's hull.

History

Once a gladiator, Krev, the owner of the Drowned Regrets, managed to fight his way to freedom. This allowed him to earn a higher standing in town as a member of the city guard, before he eventually retired his fighting days to instead open a simple inn. Rather than attempt to potentially strike it rich in the higher class parts of town, Krev found the building with the riches he earned from gladiatorial combat and made it pose as a pub for the lower class or slave caste that he was raised under.
