Golgelen Boar
Golgelen Boars; or Dusk Boars, are a species of boar that can be found within the Golgelen Jungle. Despite their massive size and harsh temperament, they're preyed upon by many other dangerous beasts lurking within the dense wilds and plagued by poor vision, a factor that leads to them lashing out at just about anyone and anything unlucky enough to be caught within their blurred sight.
Basic Information
Anatomy
They're large boars that reach around five~six feet at the shoulder and well over 10 feet in length. Their bodies are densely packed with muscular sinew, leading to a squat and bulky frame. A thick, shaggy fur covers their bodies. This fur is dark in colour, and helps provide them cover when they scrounge within the darker parts of the jungle. Most imposing is their mess of tusks and antlers; they sport a pair of massive tusks, and a single, long horn jutting above their snout. Long, branch-like horns extend out from the sides of their head; a pair of antlers that snap off and regrow.
The dark mane of fur, when combined with the thick and heavy menagerie of horns, antlers, and tusks, actually causes a slight illusion. If a boar hides close towards a Kapana bush, it grants the illusion of the beast being nothing more than old branches and twigs found amidst the foliage.
The poor eyesight is from a combination of factors. Their squat build means that their eyes are only narrowly focused directly ahead of them, but more importantly, the perpetually dim and dark setting of their ecosystem means that the boars lack a need for decent eyesight. They thus have weaker vision than others, making up for it through a powerful sense of smell.
Ecology and Habitats
Making their home in the Golgelen Jungle, the boars typically rely on this unique ecosystem due to their heavy diet relying on the glowing Kapana fruit found throughout the jungle. Their bodies are also adapted to blend in with their surrounding environment.
Dietary Needs and Habits
An omnivorous species, the Golgelen boar is best described as 'opportunistic.' They typically won't go out of their way to hunt others, but prefer scavenging off easy meals. Carrion isn't in short supply within the woods, though they typically seek out Kapana fruit, feeding upon them whilst hunkering low within the brush to keep their bodies relatively out of sight from other predators.
Despite that, they're insanely hostile towards passersby, and are known to savagely attack anyone and anything that gets within their sight range if they do not perceive it as larger than them -- given their impressive size for a boar, it isn't uncommon for many adventurers to be gored and shredded by their massive tusks.
Additional Information
Domestication
Though temperamental in the wild, there have been efforts to domesticate these beasts for use as capable battlemounts. Boars are known to be easy to appease; something as simple as food is enough to keep them happy, and they aren't aggressive enough towards people that have proven themselves to not be aggressive towards them. Ihlzlar & Odunzlar often sees these animals used as beasts of burden when travelling through the jungle.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Aside from making a decent beast of burden, Golgelen boars are often hunted for both sport and their meat. They're massive animals that can provide a lot to a community; and their thick hide makes for a sturdy, if not heavy leather.
