Backwater

Backwater is the both the colony and capital of the Cartographer's Guild.
Settled and ruled by the leader of the Cartographer's Guild, Cartographer Wendell, Backwater is an usual city in that although it is deep within the continent of Hadrashar, there is a wide river that allows larger ships to travel directly to the city and make port there. As such it has become a haven in a cruel and uncaring land. Much of the populous are either members of the Guild or explorers unaffiliated with the Guild, as well as a good number of merchants.
As a city-state, Backwater enjoys full independence from outside influences. Although the guild maintains its treaties with the other nations which allow the members of their organization passage to any land or settlement owned by any of those nations, Backwater does regulate who may enter the haven city. This keeps infiltration and much of the various pushers and movers of the other nations at bay.
Due to the characters being affiliated with the Guild, this city may be a place of frequent travel and almost a home base in the early game.
