Era 172 is an incredibly ancient, yet incredibly secretive organization about which rumors have abounded for as long as anyone can remember. Information--or at least, reliable information--about it is scarce, but they are generally understood to be connected to an ancient twilight god dating back even earlier than the Days of the Sun. What their intentions are is uncertain, but people are wary of them, and enough people claiming membership have gotten into trouble to make people suspect that they're up to no good.
