Dregnu is portrayed covered in obsidian armor flared with sharp points and spikes. His face is a shadow, beneath a horned helm. He is often depicted with his dire flail drawn and at the ready.   During Starfall, Dregnu fell to a mortal form yet to be recorded.

Relationships

Dregnu is in a constant struggle with his brother, Donaru. At their best, Dregnu and Donaru argue over how war should be waged. At their worst, the brothers wage outright war against one another.   Dregnu has fully embraced the demonic affiliations inherited from his father, Affirhet.

Worshipers

Prior to Starfall, Donaru was mostly worshiped by soldiers, mercenary groups, and athletic competitors. Soldiers, especially those on the advance, may whisper a prayer to The Warmonger so that his wrath does not turn their own ranks into The Bloody Path. Mercenary groups are also known to associate themselves with Dregnu as a way of providing assurance to their clients that they will not fail. Privately, athletic competitors, especially those in more violent professions, such as gladiators, often gave reverence to Dregnu in hopes of a quick and seamless victory.   Culturally, Dregnu was also revered in the Orcish pantheon as The Blood Hunter. In this role, Dregnu was a state of mind entirely focused on one’s instincts and reactive, rather than the more poised Donaru.

Clergy

Those that dedicate themselves to be part of Dregnu’s clergy join the Blood Reaver Horde. Each Horde is led under the banner of their high priest, or Doom Scourge, who creates and enforces political alliances with other Hordes. While these alliances may be unsteady, they are utilized to unite Hordes against common enemies.   Often Doom Scourges also serve as officers or tribal leaders of their communities utilizing their Blood Reavers to supplant political rivals, but Hordes have also been known to provide protection to communities that pay tithes to their Doom Scourge.   A Blood Reaver is a terrible opponent to meet on the battlefield and are often recognized by rust-red and black vestments and armor, especially rust-red cloaks with black trim, and use of Dregnu’s favored weapon, the dire flail.

Temples

Temples to Dregnu are less traditional in appearance, often doubling as, or primarily being, spaces for contests of strength, such as coliseums or fight-pits, military outposts and forts, or war rooms. The only distinguishing characteristic is often an effigy or statue of Dregnu.

Dogma

Dregnu’s dogma is focused around inevitable combat:
  • Train hard and plan accordingly.
  • The force of your horde is as strong as your weakest hand, it may need to be sundered to survive.
  • When the horde is unleashed, let blood fly, only through personal courage is the mettle of leadership proven.
  • Learn your opponent’s weakness and closely guard your own.
When faced with a foe or force stronger than their own, Dregnu and his followers will work in secret, focusing on bolstering their forces while undermining their enemies. While they are willing to use this underhandedness to reach their goals, they will not tolerate the same being used against them and will often radically retaliate.

Rites

Prayer to Dregnu takes on a cultural significance within the Bloody Horde. Where they choose to do their monthly communion determines where their “home” is for the next month. During these ceremonies a flame is maintained through the day and night. Around the fire, members tell stories of their victories and conquests before memorializing them through branding, scarification, bloodletting, or tattooing.   Some sects are said to perform ritual sacrifice of a volunteer or volunteered enemy during this communion or before battle to gain blessings of power. However, these practices are often kept secret and their legitimacy is often contested.

Myths and Legends

The Bloody Summer As every year, Donaru and Dregnu came to blows over a petty argument and summer began. While different sects create varying accounts of the action, all agree that Donaru believed something Dregnu did went too far, prompting Donaru to forge a new weapon. Donaru went to their father, Affirhet, and made a deal for the components he would need. With materials from the edges of the world, including starstone from Caelumscrinium and mithril from beneath the earth, and tempered in Affirhet’s magical flames, Godslayer was forged. While the weapon was crafted, the battle of summer raged on, stretching beyond Afrejore into Erdember. Crops suffered and the gods grew restless. With the power to destroy Dregnu once and for all, Donaru returned forthright and decimated Dregnu’s forces and cornered his brother. Before he struck the final blow, Donaru stopped himself. Unable to erase his brother from existence and seeing the carnage he had wrecked upon the world, Donaru prompted Dregnu to yield and the two conceded summer so autumn could begin in Setamber that year. While the wars continue to rage each year, summer has been contained from Aruntide through Afrijore. Godslayer, however, has yet to return and may be lost to time.
