The Raven Queen's Origin
The Raven Queen is a revered religious figure in parts of Viesora. The origins of the Raven Queen come from the Shadowfell, a dark plane of existence. Before the planes became connected the Shadowfell was a separate, perpetually dark plane. Also known as the Plane of Shadow, it was the opposite of the Feywild. It was home to strange creatures who thrived in the colorless space.
From the grim darkness of the Shadowfell arose a leader. The origins of the Raven Queen have been long debated. The most commonly believed story is that the Raven Queen was once an elf princess living in the Shadowfell. When the planes began to merge, the safety of the Shadowfell's people was in jeopardy. The Queen is thought to have convinced her people to perform a ritual that made her immortal and imbued her with powers equal to that of a god in order to protect her followers. As her legend spread, her power grew. In the process of her ascension, the Raven Queen blessed her people, the Shadar Kai. They now act as her faithful servants. The souls of fallen Shadar Kai return to the Queen when the physical body dies.
The Raven Queen has a personal fascination with memory and knowledge. It is thought that those killed by a servant of the Raven Queen return to life in her service, their past life's memories become a part of her collection.
The Queen is not without enemies. The demon lord Orcus has long sought to control the Shadowfell and all it touches. The Drow goddess Lolth, a master of undeath, also acts in opposition to the Queen, who hates the undead. When the Queen was ascending, a sect of her own people attempted to overthrow her rule and stop the ascension. These betrayers, known as the Redforgers, were cursed and banished from the realm. They despise Shadar Kai and will attack on sight, reduced to pure hatred.
