Waystones

The Magical Gateways

Scattered across the world of Violem, waystones are ancient piles of rocks that have formed with the ability to teleport people from one location to another. Spanning not just the lands, seas and skies but the realms themselves.

The remains of something that existed long before our own time. Yet has somehow managed to shape the future of generations. A truly fascinating example of the influences magic has on our lives.
— Hossan the 6th Mapmaker

Studies:

The first real study of waystones came from the Apatur, the Acuran of Waystones. Who devoted his life to uncvoering the magical workings of these gateways between two points in the universe. During his research, he worked out the lifespan of waystones by the erosion and cracking of the rocks. Suggesting that, with enough use, waystones will simply lose all magical connections and be deemed unusable as a form of transport.     The rock formations are found on the intersection of theorized laylines throughout Violem, resulting in a surge of magical energy capable of teleporting a person to another waystone. These waystones are linked in one of three ways. The first and most common being referred to as a point to point waystone. Where the doorways across space is direct. The second linkage type is known as a star network, where a collection of waystones are connected in a small group of three to five various locations (discovered by Hielda, Acuran of Stars). The final linkage type is unpredictable. The rarest form of waystone but noted by Realm Rangers during their work on mapping out the waystones. The lost rangers can be found in the The Great Library of Birohhal.

Rumours and Mysteries:

The simple nature of waystones has existed since the dawn of intelligent life on Violem, with many scholars suspecting they have been around since the creation of the realm itself. While there is no certainty of how they came into existence, there is many who believe waystones were left behind by a more powerful race to traverse the mortral plane easier.
Several books regarding waystones and their capabilities were lost during the disbanding of the Realm Rangers and the destruction of information that followed. One rumour that has circulated throughout the lands is that the Realm Rangers developed enchanted rings using pebbles of waystones to improve the accuracy of portal magic. Making it easier for them to travel from one realm to realm. Fragments of evidence support these claims including blueprints for unusual rings, ruined waystones on mining sites and burnt journal entires from various books.
Another story that stems from waystones is a stone golem that has the ability to walk between realms at will. The legend goes, that a member of the Realm Rangers was on the run during the early years of the dark age. After being surrounded by a group of necromancers the ranger had a moment of panic and made one last effort to save themself. Casting a spell which would bring to life a stone golem, but the spell didn't direct to the stone beneath the ground. Instead its way to the nearby waystone, coming to life and saving the ranger. As a way of thanking the golem, the ranger simply let it go to roam the realms freely.
