Mk.42 Battle rifle

This article is a work in progress
Whilst an ageing platform in the 10th Century of the 11th Millennium, the Mk.42 is a subsonic-focused rifle aimed at hitting targets at longer ranges. Its fixed bullpup design makes it a little cumbersome for close quarters but is redeemed by its accuracy at range and knock-down power on targets.   By using a variety of composite materials, the Mk.42 is able to be a lightweight, manoeuvrable and reliable rifle capable of firing subsonic and supersonic rounds to great effect thanks to its 16-inch barrel and bullpup design. The rifle is regarded as being very well-balanced thanks to its pivot-point being inline with the trigger and centre-mass point being inline with the pivot-point.

Preferred deployment

The Mk.42 found its place in the armed forces with riflemen stationed in watchtowers and in the hands of sharpshooters at a section level. This was due to the rifles' longer range than the standard rifles provided at the time.

Ammunition

Utilising the hard hitting .308 round to decimate its targets, the 20rnd magazine utilises a clear polycarbonate window to display the amount of ammunition left to the user. Upon the rifle, a machined hole is lined up with where the magazine sits when inserted into the rifle to allow continued viewing of said polycarbonate window.

Un-official modification

In a movement that has been growing in popularity, private owners of this rifle have taken to modifying it to accept belt-fed rounds and increasing the fire-rate. This inturn making the rifle more akin to an LMG with a lower fire-rate than most other LMGs using a similar size round.   This movement started with a small group of citizens who chose not to leave their homes when a portion of their city was invaded by Underlings of a Nadir. The citizens quickly realised that 20rnds was not enough for such a small group of people. And so, they took to modifying the rifle to take belts and made their own LMG. Unfortunately for the group, with too long of a sustained fire, the barrel would quickly overheat - something that would end up being the downfall of the group.   However, their story lived on and many others began making the same modifications, inspired by those before them to make the most of what they had.
