Plague of the Xaagi Islands

The Plague of the Xaagi Islands was both a global event and a devastating illness that swept the world in the mid-Deific Age, killing thousands of only one species of Sapient. The draconic Raessae succumbed to the illness quickly, almost completely eliminating them from the surface of Visctheria.

Infection

The first infected citizen had recently arrived from the mainland, a young adult Raessae who was on a visit to his parents' home. He developed a cough at first, then became extremely nauseous for days. As the nausea grew more extreme, his scales began to rot off his body, until the sickness had fully taken hold. His body began to slowly disintegrate as he perished, leaving almost nothing that could be burned in classical Raessaean tradition.

His parents were next to succumb to the illness, and it seemed to pick up pace the more it spread. Soon, the entire Islands were infected as citizens fled home to their families in a panic. Thouands died, leaving the Islands vacant and supposedly cursed.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the Plague are horrific to experience, and while they start small and unassuming, they quickly to progress to a point where the infected is unable to eat or move. Their body slowly rots away while they are still alive, breaking down under the stress of the illness.

History

In 5562 BI, a mysterious plague swept through the Xaagi Islands, slaughtering its Raessae inhabitants. Since the sickness kills quickly, few had time to flee the Islands. Those who were able to escape perished on the mainland, and the rest of the world was lucky to discover the illness only affected those of Raessaean descent.

The Plague only died off due to successful quarantine practices during a very dark and chaotic time. Meskaovania had just claimed three colonies, and the Gods of Everia still walked the land. Ghaotz, goddess of destruction, was blamed for the slaughter, and the other Gods imprisoned her deep beneath the land.

No one knew where the sickness came from until the Great Heroes proved the existence of the Tainted Ones, a dark faction of poisoners and government spies. The Heroes were able to identify the sickness as stemming from the magic of Vome Drakkar, the leader of the Tainted Ones.
