To Gore from Donnie RE: Cursed Sword of Qivrin Kels
Gore,
This is regarding the information you requested on "The Sword of Qivrin Kels".
Unfortunately, few records seem to mention the name.
The crypt in New Port was an old structure. The graveyard itself may predate the modern city, though my sources on that are particularly questionable. Very few in that area of the north opt to be buried these days and there is not much in the old records. The only note was that it was the resting place of "Dariaven Shriadiryesher", which I am fairly certain translates to something like the woman from outside or the foreign Lady, which is rather less than helpful. I mailed in a request to the department of documents for further information, but it could be weeks before they send a reply. (I saw that the queue is no shorter than usual when I detoured south briefly to Celeb).
Speaking of my detour, I did manage to learn something there. I do dislike that library... but I paid it a visit regardless. Fortunately, I managed to find a librarian without a mask. I should still be charging you extra for that I think.
In any case, I found there a single text that mentions this person, 'Qivrin Kels' by name. I do not believe it to be an original copy of the manuscript, and it is half eaten by fire, but it is something.
According to the records, it was recovered from the fortress of the Bright Flame, though this could be meaningless. The Company of The Bright Flame had a reputation for stockpiling manuscripts of unverifiable origins.
In any case, here is a transcription of the only mention of 'Qivrin Kels' that I have been able to find thus far.
<the beginning of the book seems to be a list of old important dead people, none seem related to Qivrin> ... ...And Qivrin was a lord of the land below, where the waters crash down with endless thunder, where the sunlight is cleaved and split and shattered to a thousand colours, where there is no silence in the night.
He was king of those who would be given the endless sky by the Wandering God, but he flew already, on the back of Iedei the Deathlord. <illegible>
He flew high, and fell, not to hubris, but to Treachery, and to Sia the Doomed.
He fled, first to the wandering woods, and then to Myrokar. He seethed and he simmered for many centuries, until he saw the empire of starlight rising from the land below. Outraged, he sought for an ally and found the apprentice, the fiend. Anything. Anything at all, he promised. And he gave the small one. And he gave his word. He raised the shadow dragon and he flew on the land below, and hewed a path to his long abandoned throne, bathing freely in the blood of his kin. The waters there run red still. He reclaimed his crown, but was not satisfied. His conquest caused the collapse of the Island of Roses. <burnt pages>
He was eventually killed in battle but his blood boiled and he would not rest. <here the text is unreadable> mist <more illegible> too strong for the Company <scorch marks> ... wreaked carnage across the land... <more scorch marks and something about bathing in blood> until the cursed Lord <here the page was torn.>ys defeated him.
Bound to the earth by his sword, bound to his sword by the power of one no less cursed than <illegible> .
The captain... <the page is torn off> would not dispel the curse on the blade <illegible> not risk freeing him. <???> buried with his kin <completely scorched>
(end of text)
When it stood, the Company were big on hunting all kinds of trouble but they did despise vampires in particular which could be a connecting back to where you found the sword. They were also rather pushy about completely eliminating all vampires. If the crypt you found the sword in was home to resting undead of that sort, or any sort really, it seems unlikely the Company would have let it stand. Peculiar, though not helpful. I will likely send someone else to research this further.
When you have finished with your other business, I believe you should investigate what dear old Wyldo thinks he has found in Amberlight and let me know. You know that I will pay you well.
Best of luck to you all. Do not let them overcharge you.
Donnie
