TODAY
• Lucien stopped by Evan’s place early this morning. He was coming to tell him the latest news he had on The Jagged Dream. Margo was with Evan, too (they had some ‘late night research’ to take care of the night before).
• Lucien had a run-in with some thugs the night before. They tried to intimidate Lucien into not following up on any more leads regarding the cult. Needless to say, Lucien disregarded their threats but wanted to let Evan know. Also, sensing things might get rough, Lucien brought Evan a hand crossbow for personal protection.
• When Evan answered the door there was also a small package addressed to Evan in his father’s handwriting. His dad was supposed to be away at a numenera dig site, as far as Evan knew.
• The package contained his dad’s journal of numenera research. Evan was immediately suspicious, since this was not something his dad would normally entrust to him.
• Evan decided to check in with his sister, Capula, at the university. When he arrived at her office, her assistant, Faro, told Evan she had just left that morning for a conference in Bodrov.
• Faro was dropping Professor Glockheart’s mail on her desk of for her to go through once she returned. That’s when Evan spied the Order of Truth invitation mixed in with the other correspondence stacked there.
• Knowing the university had strong ties at the Order of Truth, Evan sensed this might be an opportunity to discover relevant information about what was going on with his dad, since his sister wasn’t around.
• Evan pocketed the invitation and made his way to the Durkhal, the headquarters of the Order of Truth.
BACKGROUND & HISTORY
• Evan was born in the city of QI, and has spent all his life withing the city walls.
• His family, the Glockhearts, has a history of scholars and researchers in Qi.
• His father, Dr. Senex Glockheart, is a well-respected academic and a Dean in the College of Numenera Studies at the University of Qi.
• His mother, Eplua Glockheart, was a famous stage actress that died suddenly 15 years ago.
• Evan has a sister, as well; a brilliant professor at the University of Qi named Capula Glockheart.
• Evan has long been in the shadow of his family’s accomplishments. He’s not a Black Sheep by any means; he just hasn’t attainted the same level of success, and Evan is keenly aware of that fact.
• But Evan’s charm and good looks have helped him well in life. He was always popular with his friends and breezed through school. It is not that he isn’t smart, it’s just that people always seemed to give him the benefit of the doubt and helped him along when it might have been better for his character if he were to have struggled a little and persevered, or perhaps even failed a bit.
• Evan’s mother instilled in him a love of cooking, which he still practices until this day.
• To keep his son occupied and to keep an eye on him, Dr. Glockheart arranged for Evan to take a job as a journalist at The Qi Chronicler, run by a family friend.
• Evan is a capable reporter but was nonetheless relegated to the Entertainment section, mostly writing fluff pieces about the latest charity event or restaurant openings.
• The side effect of reporting on these events was Evan began to develop a network of contacts, hearing the latest rumors and gossip spreading around the city.
• Of note is a small piece Evan tried to get published a few years back. It involved a young, up-and-coming researcher named Thadeus that was making waves at the University of Qi. His revolutionary ideas were only amplified by his age, as he was only a child! But soon after being interviewed by Evan, the boy disappeared and the paper decided to shelf the story. Evan has always kept his ears open for mention of Thadeus, hoping to meet him again.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
• More and more, Evan has begun hearing rumors regarding a group called The Jagged Dream, supposedly a secret cult.
• They started off as small, off-handed comments heard while flirting with the wives of nobles and bureaucrats at fundraisers and charity events.
• Initially, Evan took them as fanciful, embellished stories. The wives passed it all off as gossip told by husbands trying to make their jobs seem more important. Of course, these wives were all too happy to pass this rumor along to a handsome charmer whispered close at some boring dinner party.
• But Evan continued to hear the rumor from others, at different functions and at different times: A charismatic leader; his dedicated followers; the group hellbent on creating large scale chaos.
• One common thread is a reference to an Arias Folon, the leader of the cult cell in Qi. But no one has been able to determine if this is an alias or if it is even a real person.
• Sensing this might be his opportunity to make a name for himself (and show his family that he, too, has achieved a measure of renown in his profession), Evan is currently investigating this rumor, trying to dig up some leads.
• Evan has enlisted two others to help: Margo Nance, a fellow reporter at the Chronicler who has an on-again/off-again relationship with Evan; and Lucien, an ex-city guard that now acts as a private detective.
