Session XXIV: Tracking Down a Gauntlet Report

General Summary

Following the clues that John Anderson gave them, the party went to the Celestial District on Dragonrock. Searching around, the party were not able to find anything until Dalvanak detected the thoughts of their target with Garlith following his eyes to the target. The thoughts consisted of "Marya, my love" and "temple of the dead." The culprit ran down an alley. Garlith attempted to head him off but found that the alleys were not connected and doubled back. Making himself invisible, Thaddius attempted to approach the culprit. Yet, Thaddius made a slight noise which alerted the culprit and the party all entered the alley.   The party attempted to question the culprit, but they gained few answers. He accused them of working for the Myshkins and that he would escape. The culprit was scratching on the ground, completing a ritual that raised a golem from the flagstones and undead servants. Immediately, Grewarum lashed the golem with a mindwhip, causing its slow mind to become muddled further. Thaddius threw a fireball into the crowd of enemies as he attempted to move away. The golem, however, was able to strike him twice with its fists. Garlith fired his crossbow and ducked behind a barrel for cover. Dalvanak then unleashed a mind blast that stunned the enemies.   Stunned or mind whipped, zombie and golem alike were unable to act, but the culprit was able to shake free of his stunned stupor and looked like he was going to try and escape. Darius then lashed out with his rapier, damaging more zombies while Grewarum tried to put the culprit. Thaddius, however, was able to cast an entanglement spell on the culprit, binding them. Garlith fends off another zombie while Dalvanak lets loose a barrage of sword swings and psychic might. Yet, the culprit was able to cast a spell to open a portal and escaped, leaving behind his    The party searched around for where the culprit could have been. Investigating the sewer grate that the culprit was trying to open, the party found a passage that led them to a latrine in some building, which turned out to be the Temple of the Dead. Investigating outside the latrine, they found Father Gavrila Myshkin. He had been called by the priests of the temple to investigate shadows that had seemingly closed the doors of the inner sanctum. The party showed him the documents the culprit left behind. Father Gavrila recognized some passages that referred to an ancient relative and that the person inside was Evard. He would try to hold back the power of the shadows if the party could stop Evard.    Thaddius is able to dispel the arcane lock and the party entered the sanctum. Surrounding the sanctum were the shadows, currently harmless. Flanked by ghosts and directing his horde of skeletons, Evard stood in the center of the sanctum. He accused the party of being puppets of the Myshkins, who he considers hypocrites and fanatics. He says the Man of Long Shadows has given him the power to return his lost love, Marya Myshkin to life. The shadows swirled around him as he ordered his undead armies to advance.
