Session XXXI: Growing Pains Report
The Kids Are Alright
General Summary
With Evard dead, Father Myshkin entered the room as the shadows receded and thanked the party for assisting him, taking back his lost gauntlet. He left to deliver long overdue sermons, but not before ordering the priests of the temple to properly bury Evard and giving the party coins with the Myshkin family crest and about 500 gold pieces for a reward. Elosie investigated the papers left behind and found a letter to Evard from the Man of Long Shadows and a book that allows one to create a pavement golem.
Recalling the job Khara Sulwood gave him, Faddius took Elosie and Krato along to investigate the illithid rogue Sadram to get Sulwood's memories. Along the way, they stopped at the Seeker's Library for Krato to find more information about shadow magic and the Man of Long Shadows. After exchanging some information Evard carried, the circulation desk librarian explained the origins of the Man of Long Shadows. Long ago, a group of adventurers sought the dreaded Necronomicon. They gave no names and are remembered by the names they adopted. They were led by the Man of Long Shadows and included the Man of Dry Bones, the Man of Cold Horror, the Man of Sharp Steel, and the Man of Old Rags. Shortened, they were known as Shadow, Bones, Horror, Steel and Rag. In a forgotten cavern of Larloch's Crypt, there laid the book. The Necronomicon rested in the chapel of death appointed for it. Each of the party members sought the book and they fought for it, clawing at the pages. Rag alone did not seek to keep the book, only keep it from others. For that, he was almost spared. As pages were torn, they disappeared into the ether to another place altogether.
The curse of the book was this: until all the pieces could be returned, those who defiled it would be forced to live forever in a half-life. Shadow became imbued with the shadows of death. Bones became imbued the remains of death. Horror became imbued with the horror of death. Steel became imbued with the instrument of death. Rag became imbued with the avoidance of death. There are several theories about the source of the shadow magic. Some say it is derived from the Necronomicon. Some say it is a preexisting connection to the Shadowfell. Others say it is the result of a fusion with a shadow being from the Far Realm.
Coming into the Black Pearl bar, the three party members asked the barkeep where Sadram was. Indicating to a curtain the corner, the part talked to the illithid. After some small talk and a small stakes card game, Faddius challenged Sadram for Sulwood's memories, though the party was wary as he seemed to be cheating in the last game. After some serious negotiation, Sadram agreed. Faddius and the rest of the party were able to detect and thwart Sadram's cheating and won the game.
Sadram was upset but held out the casket containing the memories. As Faddius took it, Sadram's thugs attempted to grapple him. Faddius got away but the illithid and his thugs pressed the attack. Faddius was able to blind the thugs, but Sadram resisted the spell, which allowed him to place Krato under mind control spell. For their part, the thugs were oddly successful in their blind attacks toward Elosie. Krato, unfortunately, missed retribution against the thugs but shook off the madness. Despite being surrounded, Eloise struck Sadram with some necrotic damage while the thugs tried and failed to resist their blindness and Faddius struck a thug with a firebolt. Sadram then attempted to strike Faddius with phantasmal specters, but he failed, dropping his concentration for the mind control on Krato.
